New Team on Superman Zero

DC Comics The New 52 marks the one year anniversary of the relaunch with a new creative team on the publisher’s most iconic hero. DC Comics revealed that Scott Lobdell and Kenneth Rocafort (Red Hood & The Outlaws) take over Superman with issue zero this September. Lobdell shared this excitement for his upcoming run.

“Like every other writer in the world who has ever heard of SUPERMAN, I’ve spent a good part of my life wishing for the opportunity to write the ongoing adventures of the Man of Steel!

“Grant Morrison has left me a lot of new bright and shiny new toys on the table through ACTION COMICS — and you better believe I’m going to take every one of the around the block for a ride! Thank you, Grant, for the this brave new world, and thank you DC for trusting me with the super hero who started it all.

“I wrote a proposal for the series and I remember more than once thinking ‘No way they’ll let me do this — not in a million years!’ But then I’d look up at the Post-It® over my computer that says ‘Scott, Go Bold Or Go Home!’ and I just kept writing! For weeks after I turned it in I kept waiting for the phone call that said ‘Uh, yeah. Interesting. But never in a million years, Lobdell!’ Instead I got a text that said simply said  ‘Congratulations.’

“So strap yourselves in, people, because we’re going up up upper and awayer than we’ve ever gone before!

“Yes, I am acutely aware that I have some very big shoes to fill. From Jerry and Joe right on through George and Dan and Kieth and all the other writers and artists over the run of the series.  Not too nerve-wracking, right?!

“And, of course, I probably would not have made the leap to the world’s most recognizable hero if I didn’t do it with Kenneth Rocafort at my side.  Anyone who has been following his artwork on RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS knows he has an imagination unlike many others!  He can handle the heavy lifting that comes with world building on one page, and pull a tear out of you through an intense emotional moment on the next.”

After seeing how Rocafort portrayed Starfire I look forward to seeing how he draws Lois Lane!

DC Comics will mark the one year anniversary of launching The New 52 by going back to zero. This September all the DC titles will #0 and be stand-alone stories.

“Some issues will tell the origins of a character or a team, or in some case where an origin has already been told, they will fill in the blanks in terms of questions readers may have about the New 52 DC Universe,” said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. “Each of these issues promises to reveal something surprising.”

DC will launch 4 new books during the anniversary month:

Question to DC: Where’s Raven?

Alan Scott Is Gay, A Flash Is Born On Earth 2

Earth 2 #1 courtesy DC Comics

Warning – you may not want to read this poist if you haven’t read Earth 2 #1 and #2. You may consider some of my points spoilers.

James Robinson and Nicola Scott destroy and give birth to a new world of heroes in Earth 2. This is part of DC Comics The New 52 Second Wave. I admit – I bought #2 because of the reintroduction of a gay Alan Scott/Green Lantern got my curiosity and now I’m hooked on the future of this parallel world.

The debut issue immediately dropped us on an Earth under siege. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman valiantly struggle against overwhelming odds from Apokolips. These battle scenes are a perfect example of why I believe Warner Brothers should make an epic film about DC’s Holy Trinity against Darkseid instead of full on Justice League movie.

Back to Earth 2 – A world without heroes is rebuilding. Alan Scott is a successful jet setting CEO and Jay Garrick is young guy who just got dumped by his girlfriend reevaluating his life when fate crashes into his pity party.

The mainstream media is talking about the introduction of an openly gay Alan Scott in issue 2 this week. Robinson and Scott show us Alan and his boyfriend and their glamorous life but next issue promises to be where the relationship takes back burner and the action kicks in. Is Scott already the Green Lantern or has this happened yet?

You might be buying issue 2 for the curiosity about Scott but I really enjoyed seeing how Jay Garrick becomes this world’s Flash, test runs his new power to save lives, learns a threat scarier than Darkseid is heading for this world and becomes the prey for a character I’m really excited to see – Hawkgirl!

Mister Terrific blasts from his cancelled solo series into Earth 2 this issue and immediately encounters an enemy who is out to cancel Michael forever.

I’m really impressed with Nicola Scott’s art – especially the war ravaged Trinity and world against a legion of parademons in issue one. The revamped world and new soon to be heroes are clean and crisp and I particularly loved how Scott portrays Jay’s Flash effect and the new costume!

This is a new origin for what I think will be this world’s Justice Society. I praise Robinson and DC Comics for including Alan Scott and the upcoming debut of another GLBT character. Come for the curiosity factor but you’ll stay for the great art and storytelling.

Before Watchmen Begins

Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #1 courtesy DC Comics

Love or loathe the idea Before Watchmen begins this week with Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1. DC Comics has definitely gathered an amazing team of talented artists and writers to explore the back story of the Watchmen universe.

DC Comics shared this cover by one of my favorite artist. Phil Jiminez created this variant cover to Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #1. The world’s most brilliant man is surrounded by myths and legends. The legendary Len Wein will write the story. Meeting Phil Jiminez at Emerald City Comicon in 2008 was one of my favorite con moments – I got a sketch of Storm by Jiminez!

Alan Scott Green Lantern Is Out, New DC Gay Character Teased

The mystery is over now let the speculation begin…again! Who is coming out next?

Golden Age Green Lantern comes out in Earth 2 #2 next week. DC Comics revealed Alan Scott will be reintroduced as a gay man as part of The New 52 Second Wave relaunch. Writer James Robinson says Scott will not be the only gay character in the series.

“There is another character down the line, but that character won’t be appearing for some time, so it’s probably a bit too early to talk about that,” he told the gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate, “but this book will definitely have a diverse cast. Alan Scott won’t be the only gay character in Earth 2, I promise you that.”

Justice Society of America #48 courtesy DC Comics

Thanks to Robot 6 of Comic Book Resources.

Will is be a hero, villain, sidekick? Could it be another hero (and teammate of Scott’s) from the Justice Society era? Wildcat and Doctor Fate have not be reintroduced yet.

Let the speculation begin…again!

If you didn’t catch it before…here’s the DC character I thought could be relaunched as a gay character.

Northstar’s upcoming wedding to his boyfriend Kyle has generated praise, controversy and protests. Marvel’s decision to have openly gay X-Man get married has made mainsteam media. Ken Schram of KOMO NewsRadio reached out to Howard Boyd, manager of Zanadu Comics (my Seattle comic shop!) to get his insight on the gay Marvel wedding and which DC Comics hero will be coming out.

X-Men Interview

Schram is hilarious and it’s kind of fun to hear him try to comprehend the idea of the multiverse!

Nightwing Hunted by the Owls

Nightwing #8 courtesy DC Comics

Batman #7 exposed a secret that cut into Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson’s alliance. It was another twist of the knife turned by the Court of Owls. This sinister society has been manipulating Gotham City for decades and is launching an all out war on Batman, his allies for control of Gotham.

The Night of the Owls prelude begins with this week’s Batman #8 and Nightwing #8. DC Comics offered a preview of Dick Grayson’s title by Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows. Can Nightwing save the Mayor from the Talon.
