My X-MEN: Days of Future Past Wish List

Uncanny X-Men #141 courtesy Marvel.com

With the exciting news that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will join the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Pastmy geeky brain starting thinking of what else would make this sequel even more thrilling for longtime X-fans:

Hugh Jackman leading the real Last Stand! In the classic Days of Future Past storyline Logan leads the underground resistance in a future North America ruled by Sentinels.  Magneto, Storm, Colossus and Kitty Pryde (now Kate Rasputin) are the only surviving X-Men. The heroes eventually break out of their concentration camp and join Logan on a suicide raid on Sentinel headquarters. Hugh Jackman is now in talks to join the film.

Rachel Summers! The daughter of Scott and Jean is the key to the story. Rachel is telepathic and telekinetic like her mother and uses her psionic powers to send Kate’s mind into the present day body of a younger Kitty Pryde who must convince the X-Men to prevent an assassination that will lead to this dark future. Bryce Dallas Howard (yes I know she’s already been in a Spidey movie) would be perfect as tragic daughter of Scott and Jean. Rachel was forced to be a “Hound” and track down fellow mutants. In the comic books Rachel escaped the future and went into the past became the new Phoenix and joined the X-Men. She currently teaches as the Jean Grey School.

Franklin Richards! The last surviving member of the Fantastic Four is in love with Rachel. The son of Reed and Susan Storm Richards is in the camp with the surviving X-Men and I won’t reveal his final fate. Mark Millar’s new role as Creative Consultant for the Fox controlled Marvel franchises includes the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four. This film could serve as a reboot point for both franchises similar to J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek.

Kitty Pryde/Kate Rasputin! Could Singer recruit Ellen Page to reprise her role? In the future Kate is married to Colossus (as it should be!) but agrees to have her mind travel into the past to rally the X-Men to stop a chain of events leading to the dark future. I think this is unlikely given the time period of the previous film.

Frenzy! I think the movie version will still have a Brotherhood of Mutants attempt to assassinate a Senator. The killing leads to the creation of the Sentinels. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) will need new members of their Brotherhood. Why not have the gorgeous and formidable Frenzy aka Joanna Cargill on the roster? This would be a good way to have an African-American character in this retro time period as a way to explore race relations and the human/mutant conflict. In the comics Frenzy is a former mutant terrorist (who followed Apocalypse and Magneto) but joined the staff of the Jean Grey School.

Polaris! Before I knew the X-Men: First Class sequel would be Days of Future Past I was hoping Magneto’s children (Polaris, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch) would appear in the sequel. Polaris aka Lorna Dane is a green haired mutant with magnetic powers and falls in love with Havok (played by Lucas Till.) Polaris is one of the most tragic characters in X-history and having her could lead to romantic scenes with Till and powerful scenes with the men who would be revealed as her father (Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen.) I think maybe Lorna would be the mutant sent back to save the future instead of Kitty.

Halle Berry returns as Storm! Ororo joins Logan in his assault on the Sentinel HQ in the future. I would love to see Berry (and Daniel Cudmore as Colossus) join Hugh Jackman in what is one of the most gripping scenes from the comic book series as the older broken heroes go on a suicide mission to save humanity one last time.

I’m sure I’ll think of more!

Hugh Jackman Could Join X-MEN: Days of Future Past!

I’ve been saying it’s going to happen! You have to have Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Hugh Jackman is talks to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel according to The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision.

Earlier this week Director Bryan Singer sent off the Tweet that sent the X-world buzzing: Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen would join the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past. The new film is based on the classic story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

In Days of Future Pastthe surviving X-Men of the future send Kitty Pryde (Rasputin) into the body of her past self to rally the X-Men of that era to prevent an assassination. The murder leads to an apocalyptic future in which mutant hunting robots called Sentinels rule North America and have killed or imprisoned all mutants and superheroes. A much older Wolverine leads the underground resistance movement and a final assault on the Sentinel Headquarters.

With this storyline we might see Halle Berry reprise her role as Storm, Daniel Cudmore as Colossus, Ellen Page as Kitty?

Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellen Back for X-MEN Sequel!

The Cast of X-Men: First Class courtesy Marvel.com

The Tweet that sent the X-world buzzing!

Director Bryan Singer revealed Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will join the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysofFuturePast #magneto #professorX More to come…”

Stewart and McKellen played Professor Xavier and Magneto in the first X-Men trilogy. Singer recently replaced X-Men: First Class helmer Matthew Vaughn as director of the sequel that will be based on the classic story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

In Days of Future Past the surviving X-Men of the future send Kitty Pryde (Rasputin) into the body of her past self to rally the X-Men of that era to prevent an assassination. The murder leads to an apocalyptic future in which Sentinels rule North America and have killed or imprisoned all mutants and superheroes.

This storyline leaves open the opportunity for Hugh Jackman (and other members of the original trilogy cast) to join the cast since a much older Wolverine leads the underground resistance movement in the dark future.

This is UNCANNY, ASTONISHING news! I would love to see Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender in scenes together as the once and future Master of Magnetism!

In earlier tweet Singer officially welcomed back James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult to the film.

X-MEN Sequel Will Have Classic Costumes?

Bryan Singer will direct the next movie starring the Children of the Atom! In the first X-Men movie the team wore leather suits (Cyke even made a reference to Logan about “what did you expect, yellow spandex?”) The dark leather look inspired Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s New X-Men run.

In X-Men: First Class the kids wore the blue and yellow uniforms but will the change of directors mean a change of costume?

Bryan Singer said via Twitter “For those of you wondering…no leather suits.” #xmen

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be based on the classic Chris Claremont/John Byrne tales of surviving mutants from a dystopian future going into the past to prevent an assassination and the events that led to their darker future.

The sequel is set for July 2014.

Mark Millar Explains X-MEN Sequel Director Switch

The Cast of X-Men: First Class courtesy Marvel.com

Why did X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn decide not to direct the sequel? Mark Millar explains that the Kick-Ass director will take on a movie based on The Secret Service.

“We thought Matthew was going to do X-Men first, but we found out there were actually a few imitators of ‘Secret Service’ in the works. People think you’re lying when you say you’re not trying to get your comics made into movies so quickly, but the two reasons it happens like that is first because it’s the best ad for the comic you’ll ever have. And for me, selling the book is the most important thing. The second reason is because people are always trying to rip you off. Somebody will start to work on a spec screenplay about your idea. There are three other projects I know of now about a James Bond kind of guy taking a street kid and turning him into a spy. Three screenplays were already going through Hollywood about this! So Matthew and I said, ‘Fuck this. We’re not letting anyone steal our ideas,'” Millar tells Comic Book Resources.

Bryan Singer is the front-runner to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past. Kick-Ass and The Secret Service are Millar’s creator owned titles. Millar was recently hired by Fox as Creative Consultant for their Marvel properties (X-Men, Wolverine, Fantastic Four.)

Bryan Singer Will Direct X-Men: Days of Future Past

The Cast of X-Men: First Class courtesy Marvel.com

Fox is turning to a director of hits past to carry on the X-Men franchise. Bryan Singer is officially coming back to the mansion! The director who launched the X-Men film franchise will helm X-Men: Days of Future Past according to Deadline. X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn stepped away the director’s chair but may continue to have a role as a producer.

The story will be based on the classic story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. In the mutants have been nearly wiped out by giant robots called Sentinels. Imprisoned X-Men from the future send Kitty Pryde into the past to rally the X-Men of the time to prevent an assassination that leads to their horrific future. Wolverine leads the resistance movement and a last stand (pardon the pun and remembrance of movies past) against the Sentinels. This storyline could mean the possibility of Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ellen Page and Daniel Cudmore reprising their roles. With makeup magic that could appear as older, broken versions of the characters they played in the first trilogy. This story is also noted for the introduction of Rachel Summers (daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey) and Franklin Richards (son of Reed and Sue of the Fantastic Four.)

X-MEN Sequel Director Shuffle? Singer Replaces Vaughn?

The Cast of X-Men: First Class courtesy Marvel.com

  Brace yourself X-fans!

Matthew Vaughn has decided to not direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class.

  His possible replacement: Bryan Singer.

All this behind the scenes drama is according to Deadline. The story calls X-Men: Days of Future Past a spinoff instead of a sequel. Hmmmm.

Singer launched the film franchise and directed X-Men and X2: X-Men United. Singer has been heavily involved with the sequel as a writer/producer. Vaughn and Singer could eventually swap roles on the film with Vaughn producing the script treatment he worked on with Simon Kinberg.

Mark Millar was recently hired as Creative Consultant for the Marvel superheroes franchises controlled by Fox. Vaughn directed the film version of Millar’s Kick-Ass but bowed out of the sequel. Could Millar be moving Vaughn into a film based on one of his other creations: Secret Service, Superior?

Fox controls the movie futue of the Fantastic Four. Josh Trank is directing but could Vaughn give his writing or producing expertise to the reboot of Marvel’s First Family on the big screen?

I loved the first two X-Men films by Singer and feel like this is a “coming home” for the creator. I still hope Days of Future Past (with it’s time travel elements) could reboot the X-Men films set in the present.

X-Men: First Class Sequel Plot?

The sequel of X-Men: First Class is moving ahead with director Matthew Vaughn back on board and a release date of July 18, 2014. The story continues the story of Professor Xavier and Magneto. Michael Fassbender has said he’s working with writer Simon Kinberg on the script. But could the next X-film be inspired by one of the greatest Chris Claremont/John Byrne era stories?

Ain’t It Cool News reports that the studio has registered the title Days of Future Past with the MPAA.  That may not mean anything to the movie-goer just looking for a great action film. But to an X-Men comic reader – it’s close to the Holy Grail of mutant epics.

Uncanny X-Men #141 courtesy Marvel.com

In Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 the Days of Future Past was a powerhouse two-part story in two timelines. In a future North America rules by Sentinels (mutant hunting robots) most super heroes have been hunted down and exterminated or imprisoned. Magneto, Storm, Colossus and his wife Kate (Kitty Pryde) are in the camp. Rachel Summers (daughter of Scott/Cyclops and Jean Grey) and Franklin Richards (son of Reed and Sue of the Fantastic Four) are together and living in the prison camp too. Wolverine is with an underground resistance movement.

The future X-Men conceive a daring plot to rewrite history and change the nightmare future. Rachel uses her psionic powers to send Kate’s consciousness into the past and into the body of Kitty Pryde who just joined the X-Men. Kitty must convince the mutants to go to Washington, D.C. to prevent the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants led by Mystique. The killing of Kelly led to the country’s hatred of mutants and implementation of Sentinels. While the past X-Men race to prevent the assassination, the remaining future X-Men fight the Sentinels.

Uncanny X-Men #142 courtesy Marvel.com

The next X-Men film will likely not follow the storyline exactly but it could be an exciting way to reboot the entire film franchise but like Spock created a new timeline in JJ Abrams Star Trek.

We could forget X-Men: The Last Stand ever happened. Professor Xavier and Cyke would still be alive. It could be a whole new beginning for the film franchise and I love Rachel Summers.

 Thanks to Collider.
