Legendary Writer In AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Finale

Dan Slott is been taking Peter Parker to new heights as the latest in the long line of creators keeping Spider-Man swinging. Marvel revealed a legendary creator is back for the milestone final issue. J.M. DeMatteis wrote a story for Amazing Spider-Man #700 out today.

“I think it’s because Peter Parker is the most psychologically real character in any super-hero universe—and I almost hesitate to use the word character,” he explains of his affinity for Spidey. “I believe in Peter. I identify with him. His trials and tribulations reflect my own and that’s allowed me to pour so much of myself into Peter when I’ve written him. A kind of mind-meld happens and we become one person,” reveals DeMatteis.

“I think the readers react similarly; there’s something about Peter that resonates with them, that feels true. He is, first and foremost, the everyman of super heroes. He’s one of us. That’s why I’m always happy to revisit the character: it’s like getting a chance to hang out with one of my oldest and dearest friends.”

The legendary creator gives a hint of what his story will be.

“What I will say is that I wanted to do a story that was special and unlike any Spider-Man story I’d done before. One that was a suitable for this big anniversary celebration. I think my story, “Spider Dreams,” fits the bill. It’s a stand-alone story that—well, if I say anything more about it, I’ll spoil the surprise, so I’ll shut my big mouth now.”

I wonder if Spider Dreams is inspired by one of my favorite Spidey stories you could call nightmarish! Kraven’s Last Hunt by DeMatteis and Mike Zeck is just one of the classic storylines by this incredible writer.

Superior Spider-Man

Superior Spider-Man #1 courtesy Marvel

Amazing Spider-Man swings for the final time with issue #700 but in 2013 your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is feeling Superior! Marvel Comics is shaking up their roster of famous heroes and titles. The relaunch will mean a brand new and darker webslinger. Today’s news may give current fans chills over the fate of Peter Parker.

Marvel announced Superior Spider-Man #1 will debut this January with current AMS writer Dan Slott and artist Ryan Stegman will spin the tales of a new Spidey. Slott reveals what makes a Superior Spider-Man on Marvel.com.

“That’s a tricky thing. It could be their powers. It could be an overestimation of their self-worth. It could be that they’re calling themselves Superior Spider-Man. Or it truly could be that they have some qualities that Peter Parker lacks. How is that possible?”

Peter Parker’s adventures are filled with some fan-favorites supporting characters. How will the new title and leading man interact with the Parker’s friends and allies?

“This is still very much the world of Spider-Man. There may be a new Spider-Man here, doing things in a new and different way, but you’re going to see the Spider-cast reacting to this. You’re going to see how this Spider-Man will deal with our Spider-Man’s villains. How will he react to this Spider-Man’s supporting cast? Whoever makes it out of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 will find a different Spider-Man waiting for them when Superior Spider-Man starts.”

Dan Slott teased a potential new Sinister Six and confirmed the return of the Vulture.

For many characters, and for many things in Spider-Man’s world, there are dark days ahead,” Slott revealed about Parker’s friends at Horizon Labs.

Does this mean Peter Parker will die in Amazing Spider-Man #700? Slott has reportedly said he will have to hide from the public after the milestone issue.

“Passions run high and fast. And I expect many message boards to be consumed with flames as all this stuff goes down. But at the same time, I feel that once #700 is over, and when SUPERIOR launches, I think a lot of people are going to walk into this and go, “what have they done?” But when they get to the end of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1, there will be a moment of, “oooh,” and then it’ll be safe for me to poke my head out and to walk the streets again.”

Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos and Giusseppe Camucoli will be the artist on the new series.

Amazing Spider-Man’s 50th

Amazing Spider-Man #692 courtesy Marvel

Today the 50th Anniversary issue of Amazing Spider-Man arrives in comic book stores. Marvel celebrates issue #692 with an overstuffed issue by fan favorite Spidey writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos. Slott spins a new story with a new twist on Uncle Ben’s “with great power comes great responsibility” motto.

Spider-Man is getting a sidekick. This Anniversary issue’s introduction of Andy McGuire/Alpha moves Peter Parker forward into all new story possibilities.

Amazing Spider-Man #692 70’s Variant courtesy Marvel

Daredevil artist Marcos Martin created variant covers celebrating Spidey’s past through the decades. I have to say this 70’s variant is my favorite because it’s one of Peter Parker’s most emotional and vulnerable moments with his (and our) beloved Gwen Stacy.

The 80’s variant is basic black and white just like the costume that defined that era. Each decade has a color theme. Happy Anniversary Spidey! Thank you Stan Lee and Steve Ditko! Thanks to Dan Slott for continuing the legacy!

What Do You Get Amazing Spider-Man For His 50th Anniversary?

  A teen sidekick?

A new cinematic Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) scored on the big screen and rebooted the Spider-Man movie franchise. This week get ready for a huge change in Spidey’s flagship comic book. Spidey is getting a sidekick in this week’s 50th Anniversary issue –Amazing Spider-Man #692.
Writer Dan Slott and Artist Humberto Ramos give Peter Parker a new partner. Slacker teen Andy McGuire becomes “Alpha” when he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time…in a lab with Peter Parker.

Spider-Man is an Avenger, part of the Future Foundation and has co-starred in his own team-up book but he’s never had a teen sidekick. Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso revealed to Fox why this is the time for a partner?

“Part of it is that Spider-Man is grown up,” said Alonso, “He’s older, more seasoned, but young at heart. He’s still a young man, but he’s been around. It’s interesting because it flips the paradigm. Teen hero Spider-Man is now responsible for this teen hero sidekick. He’s responsible because one of his inventions caused this kid to get his powers. He’s directly responsible for the responsibility this kid now has with his new powers. He feels he has a responsibility to make sure this kid walks the right path, which won’t prove easy.”

Amazing Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott says don’t expect this team to be exactly like DC’s dynamic duo.

“If you put Spider-Man and Batman in the same situation, you’re going to have way more fun with Spider-Man,” said Dan Slott. “With Batman, he never really screws up the way Spider-Man does; he always seems to make the right decision. But with Spider-Man, he always screws up. He’s us as a superhero. Batman is a paragon of what we’d like to be, but in reality, we’re more like Spider-Man. He makes all the mistakes we make.”

Amazing Spider-Man’s Monster Mash

Amazing Spider-Man #688 courtesy Marvel.com

Dr. Curt Connors aka The Lizard (Rhys Ifans) will torment Andrew Garfield in the big screen reboot Amazing Spider-Man in just weeks. Dan Slott unleashes the Lizard in this week’s Amazing Spider-Man #688 with art by Giuseppe Camucolo. The rampaging reptilian isn’t the only horrific foe in this new storyline. Spidey is caught between the Lizard and Morbius the Vampire as he tries to cure Dr. Curt Connors.

“We’ve had funny stories, crime stories, team-up stories, summer blockbuster stories, personal stories—this time, we’re going for horror,” Slott tells Marvel.com. “This summer we’re giving you a chiller; we’re going from wall-crawling to skin crawling.”

My favorite Lizard story is Torment. This was in Spider-Man #1-5 written and drawn By Todd McFarlane. And I recommend The Gauntlet storyline because I love how Chris Bachalo draws the Lizard.
