All-New X-Men #3 Mutant Rebirth Equals Death?

All-New X-Men #3 courtesy Marvel

In All-New X-Men #1 Brian Michael Bendis set up the new status quo of the mutant race in the Marvel Universe. In Issue #2 past met present when Beast brought the original five X-Men into the our time in order to save the future. This week’s All-New X-Men #3 focuses on the future cast of the soon-to-be relaunched Uncanny X-Men. Cyclops and Magneto have a bitter reunion with Emma Frost. It’s going to be fun seeing the former lovers forced to work together after what happened in AvX. We also learn in this issue that the former Phoenix Five may be paying a terrible price for hosting the entity during AvX.

I really enjoyed the scenes between Cyclops and Magneto. The former enemies are now allies. The Master of Magnetism became a follower of Scott in recent years. In this issue the Master delivers a powerful lesson to Scott. The appeal of Magneto as a great villain is that he believes his motives are just and he’s willing to play the villain. Cyclops has been on that same journey but accepting that role is not as easy. There’s a moment when Erik basically calls Scott out and it shows Bendis’s great understanding and handling of these characters.

The previous issues were packed with more joy and action. It’s appropriate this chapter is darker and shows how Scott, Erik and Emma are paying for their sins but still pushing for revolution. The final panel is exciting and sets the stage for a huge showdown next issue.

After this issue I have a theory:

Are the new post AvX mutants killing the pre AvX mutants?

The mutant race was reborn because of the Hope/Scarlet Witch/Phoenix act in AvX #12. New mutants are emerging at an alarming rate. Beast is mutating again and it’s killing him as we learned in All-New X-Men #1. In this issue Cyclops, Magneto and Emma’s mutant powers are weaker? It was a stuggle for Scott to generate his optic blast.

Did that energy surge in AvX #12 that re-ignited the mutant race start a genetic transfer among Earth’s mutants? Could it be that for every new mutant now born it will cost the powers and maybe lives of the existing mutants before AvX? It would be an interesting long-term story element for Bendis to explore and something to watch for as he chronicles the future of the X-Men.

Bendis Teases Death in All-New X-Men

Brian Michael Bendis really affected the X-Men when he was writing the Avengers. Can you imagine what the writer will put the Children of the Atom through now that he’s writing the X-Men?

From the first issue of All-New X-Men #1 we know that Beast’s days may be numbered due to his mutation…mutating.  Henry brings the original five X-Men into the Marvel Now hoping to make the modern-day Cyclops change the path he’s taken. Will this blast from the past end in death for a modern mutantr one of Xavier’s originals? Bendis talked with MTV Geek about his past, present and future impact on the X-Men.

“All-New X-Men” is an entry point into a brave, new, angsty mutant-filled world for Bendis who’s been the number one “Avengers” guy for years. He said, “I had done a lot of stuff to the “X-Men” universe without being an “X-Men” writer. Like, “House of M” gave Wolverine his memories back, I killed Charles Xavier, I know it shows a lot of destruction, but it showed to me, a lot of love and affection for the X-Men.”

According to Bendis, “All-New X-Men” is really about looking back and paying tribute to the Silver Age adventures of the “X-Men,” while pushing the title forward into an exciting, unexpected and “All-New” future.

Many Avengers died under Bendis’s watch. The writer is teasing death in this rebirth of the X-Men:

“Which one of them dies, what happens then?”

Will Beast Die in All-New X-Men?

All-New X-Men #5 courtesy Marvel

Is the Beast an endangered species?

In All-New X-Men #1 Henry McCoy revealed that he’s mutating again and he may not survive the experience. Beast has been the heart, soul and moral compass of the X-Men. I was pleasantly surprised to see how Brian Michael Bendis is using the Henry to launch the new series. Henry thinks the key to saving the future of the mutant race lies in the past with the original five X-Men.

All-New X-Men #2 is out this week. How will Xavier’s original students react to seeing their future?

The first arc will conclude with issue #5 and Comics Newsarama has this exclusive first look inside the final chapter of the first storyline.

It does not look good for Dr. McCoy. How many times have we seen Beast watching over and trying to heal an injured mutant? The last time Hank mutated (in Grant Morrison’s New X-Men era) he evolved into his more feline appearance. What are Hank’s genes doing to his body now and can anyone help him? Will the X-Men turn to  Mister Sinister or the Dark Beast (from the Age of Apocalypse) for help. When I saw this image I remembered Henry’s search for a way to restart the mutant race in Endangered Species

Cyclops continues his campaign to recruit new mutants for his cause. I can’t wait for Cyclops to meet his younger self and how will he react when learns Hank may be dying?

X-MEN: 1 Book Ends, 1 Begins

Uncanny X-Men #1 courtesy Marvel

The evolution of the X-Men books really mutates in February 2013. In the just released solicitations for February 2013 Marvel calls X-Men #41 the final issue with Seth Peck writing a last story of Storm’s “security unit.”

This title was born with “Curse of the X-Men” and the vampire/mutant war. My favorite run was Brian Wood and David Lopez’s “Proto Mutants” saga. Seth Peck just took over with this month’s Domino solo story guest starring Daredevil.

This is the final month of the Marvel Now! relaunch so it seems this adjectiveless X-Men book will not relaunch.

Uncanny X-Men (deja vu?) relaunches this month with 2 issues helmed by Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo. Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magneto and Magik are rescuing and recruiting new mutants to their cause. Are they heroes or terrorists? There is a mole on the team! Who is betraying this team and why?
