The Birds of Prey become the hunted! DC’s female crime fighting force face Talon and the Court of Owls as part of the Batman family epic Night of the Owls.
Gotham’s finest females welcomes Travel Foreman as the new artist with Birds of Prey #9 coming in May. Here’s a preview sketch below. Foreman’s work on Animal Man is winning him raves.
“We’re really challenging him to go against his animal instincts in his first issue; from the woods to the city streets, from a single super character (OK, with family) to a team book, from one small corner of the DC universe right into the big Bat landscape. It’s going to be exciting!” Editor Bobbie Chase tells The Source.
If you haven’t flown with Birds of Prey yet – the New 52 lineup is Black Canary, Batgirl, Katana, Poison Ivy and the one member that knocked me out – Starling.
As DC Comics New 52 marches on every new villain’s debut is hotly anticipated. Mister Freeze debuts in Batman Annual #1. The icy enemy is connected to the hottest Bat-storyline in years. What is the chilling foe’s role in the Court of Owls scheme to seize Gotham City.
“Mr. Freeze is a character full of pathos and tragedy and at the end of the day, he’s one of Batman’s deadliest,” Batman writer Scott Snyder told The Source. “So as you can imagine, I’m very excited to be able to do a story that establishes him in the new DCU, with rising stars James Tynion IV and Jay Fabok. This will be tale that really digs into Freeze’s psyche, explaining his connection to the Court of Owls in the present, and exploring dark secrets about his past. Really thrilled to see what you guys think!”
Jay Fabok provided this chilling preview art revealing Freeze on Batman Annual #1 coming in May.
Calling Batman #5 the latest chapter is not giving Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo the credit they deserve. Batman #5 is a work of macabre art and a bold experiment in storytelling that will take its place in graphic novel history.
Batman is caught in the ultimate trap set by the Court of Owls. As our hero tries to stay focused in their elaborate labyrinth the comic book you’re reading actually twists and turns taking you inside the mindwarping maze right up the slaughter.
You may actually may feel discomfort and tension just like Batman as your watch him lose his sanity and struggle to maneuver inside the trap. Snyder and Capullo have created an experience.
This is the work of two dark creative forces literally breaking a hero’s psyche and taking the reader into his journey into madness. The Court of Owls may still remain a mystery but clearly Snyder and Capullo are master manipulators like the villains with a grip on Gotham City and making Batman lose his grip on reality.
The Court of Owls mystery helps make Scott Snyder’s Batman my favorite DC New 52 title. DC Comics recruited fan favorite Gary Frank for this variant cover to Batman #6 showing Batman battling the Talon, The Court of Owls enforcer.
Batman #5 is out tomorrow. DC’s The Source has this first look at Gary Frank’s variant cover to #6.
One of my favorite new DC New 52 series is Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. Batman is plagued by the Court of Owls and the Talon, their enforcer. Snyder’s revealed the entwined dark history of his secret society, Bruce Wayne’s family and Gotham City.
Batman #8 will feature the first of a series of back-up stories exploring the secret group’s past and agenda. The back-up tales will unite Snyder with his American Vampire partner Rafael Albuquerque.
“The first backup, in issue eight will give a sense of the terrifying scope of the Court of Owls’ attack on Gotham. This really will be the first shot in a war for the soul of Gotham City,” said Snyder. “And then, starting in issue nine, we’ll begin a three part story called ‘The Fall of the House of Wayne’ that will investigate the secret history of the Court of Owls and its relationship to the Wayne family – particularly to Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce’s parents. The story will be told from the point of view of Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred’s father, and offer some big surprises and shocks about the forces that shaped the bat-mythology as we know it. Can’t wait for you all to see these stories!”
Snyder will co-write these stories with James Tynion IV.
“I’m also excited to be co-writing with my friend, James Tynion IV, a young writer I’m extremely excited about. Especially in the spirit of the New 52, it’s a real thrill to get to give someone new and talented a chance to get his foot in the door, and James is a writer to watch and expect great things from!”
The back-up stories will build up to May’s huge cross-over with all the Batman titles, Night of the Owls, which will reveal the impact of the society’s master plan.
