The biggest news of the network Fall up fronts (when all the U.S. television networks reveal their new shows and lineups) is the official word that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has been picked up and will air on ABC this Fall!
Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon wrote and directed the pilot starring the superspy agency that’s been a huge part of the recent Marvel films.
At New York Comic Con Marvel announced Clark Gregg will reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson in the SHIELD live-action television pilot by Joss Whedon. Gregg played Coulson in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers.
The actor is the voice of Principal Coulson on the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
Maybe the clever agent used his life model decoy in the his encounter with Loki in The Avengers? Phil Coulson recently joined the Marvel comic universe in the Battle Scars mini-series.
If you haven’t seen Marvel’s The Avengers yet you may not want to keep reading this post.

OK
HERE IT COMES
Joss Whedon always kills the ones we love and we love him for it. Death has meaning, impact and drama in Buffy, Serenity, Angel, and The Avengers. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes needed someone to avenge. Agent Phil Coulson had to die. But Whedon tells io9 it wasn’t completely on him this time.
In our first meeting Kevin Feige said, this is what we’re gonna do and I said, “Oh but you have to go out there and tell everybody that it was your idea because this is going to get me so much s—. Because they are all going to be like, “Oh he did it again!” It was stipulated from the beginning, and I completely agree that it was the right thing to do, and so did Clark. Who said in the early days, when I was busy apologizing for it, “In a movie like this, with what’s going on if there isn’t some toll, it’s just irresponsible story telling.”
This Geek’s Take: It never occured to me that Agent Coulson would die because I was so caught up in the movie. Phil, you will be missed. I’m glad Coulson will live on in the Marvel comic universe.
Cobie Smulders brings SHIELD operative Maria Hill to the big screen in Marvel’s The Avengers. Hill was created during the Brian Michael Bendis Avengers run and went up against Nick Fury and Tony Stark. Smulders joins Clark Gregg who’s played Agent Phil Coulson in Iron Man and Thor. The Marvel comic book version of Coulson made his debut in Shattered Heroes – along with an African-American Nick Fury (Jr.)
Gregg tells The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision the Marvel movies make a strong effort to be respectful of the comic book source and that resource was on set as he built his character.
“The fanboys and girls are very interested in [mythology] like, ‘that goes directly against what goes in the comic’,” Gregg said. “And they can’t do that with me. I feel like these movies are designed to respect those comics, so I always made a point of checking out what there was about S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“The great thing is that the Marvel guys are there and you say, ‘I need a little more background on Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ and the next day they hand you this thing that any fanboy would die for, kind of an encyclopedia illustrated about the history of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Smulders says Joss Whedon helped her translate an iconic character.
“Joss Whedon, he is really hands-on and he wants every character to have a life on and off-screen,” Smulders said. “He is really involved in making sure that every person has their moments. And I really felt like a part of a team – I really felt linked to Coulson and to Fury and especially our role in the film.”

Here’s hoping we might see a SHIELD/Nick Fury movie – here are my thoughts on Marvel stories that would translate to the big screen.
Clark Gregg plays it cool and professional as SHIELD Agent Coulson in the cinematic Marvel universe (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor). Gregg tells Collider he’s a cut of The Avengers.
“I’m very excited for people to see this movie. I think the fans, like me, will be as excited as I was, when I saw it. From the minute I read Joss Whedon’s script, I thought, “Oh, man, this is going to be fun to do!” The hardest thing to get right is to figure out how to bring all those characters together, and to fulfill the promise of The Avengers. They really set a very high bar for themselves because you’ve been setting this coalition up, for these five movies, and they better deliver. And in my opinion, they thoroughly deliver.”
For Gregg’s entire interview including his voice work on Ultimate Spider-Man here’s the Collider link.
Marvel reveals a new image from The Avengers on their Facebook page. Clark Gregg as SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson and Chris Hemsworth as Thor are pictured on board the SHIELD Helicarrier. Maybe they’re looking at Loki’s secret army?
In Marvel Comics history Loki’s scheming causes the Avengers to assemble. Loki is the main villain behind the big screen assembling of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but who has his back against combined forces of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and SHIELD?
Clark Gregg plays SHIELD Agent Coulson in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers. Comic Book Movie has an exclusive with the actor.
When asked if fans will recognize Loki’s army, Gregg responded, “Well I guess that will depend on the fan and what they’ve read and what they’ve seen,” said Gregg. Jokingly, he went on to say, “I mean if they’re fans of Land of the Lost then they won’t be surprised to see Loki show up with a bunch of Sleestaks. I think everyone is going to be surprised to see Loki get out of a Romulan ship is all I’m going to say.”
The answer could get minds warping with all kinds of speculation. It certainly could add fuel to the fire that the Skrulls are allied with Loki. The Skrull are reptilian aliens with shapeshifting powers.
In Marvel history, when Kree-Skrull War threatened Earth the Avengers held the line. In the epic Secret Invasion – the Skrulls infiltrated every super hero team with shapeshifters in their plot to conquer our planet.
Being the God of Mischief, Loki is likely to be the instigator of a conflict between Earth and the Skrulls – if that turns out to be the case.
Special note: The Tesseract was a device from Asgardian myth sought after by the Red Skull in the Captain America movie. This device is a variation (different name though) of the Cosmic Cube. In Marvel history, it was theorized that the Skrulls created one of the Cosmic Cubes.
