One of the most radical reinventions of the Children of the Atom is born again in as the Secret Wars event continues this week.

X-Men in black leather, Professor X’s evil twin sister “outed” him, Emma Frost joined the team, Beast went feline and kids with some of the weirdest mutations and appearances join the school.

It was the New X-Men era by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. E is for Extinction was the first game-changing arc (Cassandra Nova emerges and kills millions of mutants on Genosha) and the title of the new Secret Wars tie-in book this week. Grant Morrison’s epic Batman run ends with Batman, Incorporated #13 out this week. It will mark a final showdown between Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul after the murder of their son, Damian. The writer has said some fans will hate the ending but what about the partner in crime?

Series artist Chris Burnham recalls his favorite visual moments of the series:

“One good one that’s leaping to mind is the page in #6 where the Heretic is in the stairway with a giant boulder tied to the nooses around all those hobos’ necks. Figuring out the camera angles to effectively communicate the complicated setup and payoff was really tricky, but I think I pulled it off,” Continue reading Chris Burnham on BATMAN, INC Finale and Special

BATMAN INCORPORATED #12 Review

Talia Al Ghul may now be the most cruel villain in comic book history. Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham deliver the most bloody and twisted chapter yet in the war between Bruce Wayne and the devil’s daughter in Batman, Incorporated #12.

Bruce is relentless in his quest to stop Leviathan and get revenge for the death of his son. The words are few, the action is swift, the visuals are powerful and visceral. Grant Morrison chooses his words like weapons. There’s no “pow” or “bam” in this Batman. Burnham makes you feel every bone-crunching, skin-mauling act of violence. Batman and the Heretic’s epic battle feels like an operatic war of Angels of Heaven and Hell. This issue delivers the battle you’ve been craving since Damian Wayne was killed. You feel Bruce’s anger and wrath unleashed on Robin’s killer. As Bruce’s allies join the climatic battle, Talia’s most horrific family secret is revealed.

This is Grant Morrison’s penultimate issue but he’s still starting new mysteries for future writers to explore. You feel like you’ve watched a massive movie within this one issue. Batman, Incorporated appears to be destroyed. Gotham City is set to “die.” It all comes down to Talia and Bruce one-on-one…for one last time?
