We continue our look at the amazing year in comic books. Here are more of our favorite heroes, moments, creators and trends of 2013.

Best Team Leader: Steve Rogers, now and forever but especially as seen in Infinity. This is a celebration of the women of comics in 2013 – characters and creators who made an impact!

Jean Grey

After years of teasing the return of Jean, Marvel did make her part of the Marvel Now in a way no one was saw coming! In a brilliant move – writer Brian Michael Bendis brought the original five X-Men (actually Beast did it) into present in All-New X-Men #1. Future shock ignited Jean’s powers earlier than it should have and by the first arc was over – a strong, confident Jean declared she and her originals were Continue reading Best of 2013 Women of the Year Part 1

The special Captain Marvel Carol Corps issue is out today. To celebrate the arrival of Captain Marvel #17 I wanted to share the final part of my one on one with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick at GeekGirlCon.

The Carol Corps would love to see Carol Danvers make the leap from comic books to television or a movie. Could we see Carol on an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or an Avengers sequel or possibly her own series or solo movie?

I asked DeConnick what’s the most important for filmmakers to get right about Carol in transitioning the fan-favorite Avenger from comic book to other mediums.

Kelly Sue DeConnick made her first appearance at the third annual GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle. The celebration of women in geek culture was an opportunity for the Carol Corps to show their support for the writer of Captain Marvel and the author’s continuing mission to inspire women who want careers in comics.

I’ve seen DeConnick reach out to young women after Emerald City and Rose City Comic Con panels to encourage them. The Captain Marvel writer recently made headlines at the Women of Marvel panel at New York Comic Con for saying she was “willing to be disliked…willing to be called names, willing to make people uncomfortable so my daughter doesn’t have to.”

DeConnick’s success and passionate support of women in the creative field made her the perfect guest for GeekGirlCon. Continue reading Kelly Sue DeConnick at GeekGirlCon

The Carol Corps was in force at GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle as writer Kelly Sue DeConnick made her first appearance at the third annual celebration of women in geek culture.

Geeks of all genders cheered as the Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble writer took the stage. It was the first con where Captain Marvel cosplayers outnumbered the every-popular Black Widows, Harleys and Ivy’s. That fan devotion is part of the Captain’s success and big plans in 2014.

As part of the All-New Marvel Now initiative Captain Marvel will get a new number one. I asked DeConnick about the reasons for starting at one and how it inspires her to write for the fan-favorite Avenger. Continue reading Kelly Sue DeConnick on New CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 at GGC13
