Chris Evans on Captain America’s Role & Suit in “The Avengers”

Captain America: The First Avenger left off with World War II era super soldier waking up in modern-day New York. Marvel’s The Avengers picks up Steve’s story as a man out of time. Chris Evans reprises his role as the wholesome hero who lives by a moral code.

“Cap is struggling to find his footing in a modern-day,” Evans tells Marvel.com. “He’s a fish out of water [and] kind of stuck in his old mentality and his old ways. The jet and all the technology of S.H.I.E.L.D. and [Iron Man’s] suit–that does blow his mind, but the thing that he’s really at odds with is…the changes in society. Morals and values, and the way people interact.” With the modern age comes a new suit for the Star Spangled Avenger. Evans appears to be happy with the SHIELD made version of his iconic uniform.

“The last [suit] was…very difficult to move in,” he confesses. “This one actually looks much more like the comic book. A little toastier, but it all looks great. Doing ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ was strange because you look around and you’re the only super hero walking around. [Then] the first day on this set, Hemsworth’s in his cape and Downey’s got the armor. Just on a personal career level, the stuff I’ve been able to do in this movie…has been the most geeked out I’ve ever felt on a movie set.”

Marvel’s The Avengers opens May 4th and the Captain America sequel is slated for April 4, 2014.

The Next Great X-Villain Is Here

Uncanny X-Men #10 courtesy Marvel

Kieron Gillen is firing on all wicked cylinders with Uncanny X-Men #10. AvX is taking over for a while but I can’t wait to see what happens next with the devious plot threads he launched with this issue.

Unit is an alien computer-like creation that’s cold and clinical. He’s a chilling hybrid of C3PO and Hannibal Lecter – that’s Gillen’s description and it’s spot on! I say he could be the X-Men’s Ultron.

Unit stages a prison break unleashing alien criminal across Earth and uniting the X-Men and Avengers one last time before AvX. But Unit’s real objective is the mutant messiah.

Scott’s Extinction team of most powerful mutants is skillfully taken apart with cold precision by Unit. The monster’s endgame is an audience with Hope with the promise (or is it a lure) of learning about the Phoenix.

Watch for two big confrontations for Cyclops in this event filled issue. Due to Scott’s actions Steve Rogers sees a different side of the mutant – planting the seeds for how each leader may strategize against each other in AvX. Abigail Brand of S.W.O.R.D. and Cyke have a testy moment where they share dark secrets and the beginning of  darker covenant.

Oh and I if you love Emma Frost and Colossus – there are some surprises for them in this issue too that will reverberate into future stories.

And I freakin’ love Adam Kubert’s cover – it’s a perfect representation for what Gillen does to the team and this book.

AvX: The Intimate Cost of War

New Avengers #24 courtesy Marvel.com

I just read New Avengers #24. Avengers vs. X-Men is the epic. AvX: Vs is all fights. I think New Avengers (and the other X-Men, Avengers tie-ins) will have the emotion and intimacy.

The majority of issue #24 is the day before Captain America leads a team to confront Cyclops on Utopia. There are moments of great emotional power with Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. The couple confront their conflicting roles as heroes and parents. I’ve enjoyed how Brian Michael Bendis has written Luke and Jessica. Marvel’s most romantic and engaging couple is once again challenged by their responsibilities as heroes.

As we count down to the end of the Bendis Avengers era, I think Luke and Jessica may be my favorite of his many contributions to the Avengers legacy.

Captain America Sequel Sets 2014 Date

Chris Evans in Marvel's the Avengers courtesy Marvel

Disney and Marvel announce the Captain America sequel will hit April 4, 2014.

Cap’s second solo adventure will “pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.”

Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers.
For the entire press release here’s the Marvel.com link.

A Geek’s Hope: I really hope Marvel/Disney will use Ed Brubaker’s The Winter Soldier epic as the inspiration for the modern-day set sequel. This would mean Sebastian Stan returning as a very different Bucky Barnes. Plus the introduction of the Red Skull’s daughter Sin and her lover/enforcer Crossbones.

Marvel recently revealed they’ve narrowed down their list of directors.

Captain America 2 Director Short List

Chris Evans wields the shield but he may have two directors yelling “action” for him to throw it! Marvel is closing in on a director for the sequel. Vulture reports that Anthony and Joe Russo (director/producers brothers of comedies: Community, Happy Endings, Arrested Development) are in the running. F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job remake, The Negotiator, Friday) and George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) are on the short list.

 Thanks Spinoff Online.

This Geek’s Opinion: Have Faith in the Feige. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has a track record of turning surprise choices into hit movies. I have two more words to say about Captain America 2: WINTER SOLDIER.

Avengers Assemble in Seattle

Tom Hiddleston as Loki & Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Thor courtesy Marvel

Not only is Seattle comic book cool because we’re the home of Emerald City Comicon, Ed Brubaker, Fantagraphics and Soundgarden (their first song in 15 years will be featured in Marvel’s The Avengers!) but we have the Seattle International Film Festival.

SIFF Cinema is giving Avengers fans their own heroic festival to get caught up on the super team’s solo adventures. The Avengers Assemble series is April 30th May 4th at SIFF Cinema Uptown. You can see The Incredible Hulk, an Iron Man Double Feature, Thor in 3D and Captain America: The First Avenger in 3D.

And don’t forget the The International Film Festival starts May 17th.

“Captain America: The First Avenger” Star Goes to Washington

Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger courtesy Marvel.com

Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger) joined the cast of Political Animals according to Deadline. Stan will play the son of a former First Lady played by Sigourney Weaver. The 6 episode USA drama will focus on the fictional political family based in Washington, DC.

Here’s hoping Stan will be seen again in a Captain America 2 as Bucky reborn at The Winter Soldier.
