Brian Wood on Kitty Pryde in X-MEN

Kitty Pryde has come a long way from being the teenager scared of Wolverine, unsure of her powers and crushing on Russian hunk. Kitty is now central to the X-Men starring in multiple books. I want to share part of Brian Wood’s Marvel.com interview about Kitty’s role on the new, all-female X-Men series:

“Traditionally, Kitty’s the brains of the outfit, and has a tendency to be the smartest one in whatever room she happens to walk into. Her role in this team is the strategist, the fixer, the problem-solver and the deliverer-of-wise-cracks. I like writing her as hyper-capable—well, they all are, really, but each in their own way. Kitty’s way is to be clever as hell, able to read people really well, and [she] is most likely to be the one Continue reading Brian Wood on Kitty Pryde in X-MEN

Brian Wood on Psylocke in X-MEN

There’s an amazing scene in X-Men #1 where Psylocke is portrayed as a psychic sniper. Armed with a telepathic bow and arrow, Betsy is poised to strike like Hawkeye in his first appearance in The Avengers film.

Betsy joins Storm, Kitty Pryde, Rogue and Rachel Grey in an all-female team on a mission to protect a mysterious orphan found by Jubilee. Writer Brian Wood tells Marvel.com how Betsy fits on this squad and her expanded powers as a “psychic ninja.”

“Psylocke’s primary role on this team is that of muscle, but in a very different way. My editor [Jeanine Schaefer] has unofficially tagged her “the point person” in the tactical Continue reading Brian Wood on Psylocke in X-MEN

Storm, Brian Wood, Olivier Coipel – it’s a creative marriage made in geek heaven!

X-Men #1 by Wood & Coipel launched this week with Ororo in command of an all-female team. Wood’s smashing take on the mutant windrider on the previous volume of X-Men last year was a hit with fans. I even declared Wood’s writing of Storm was the best since the Chris Claremont golden years.

The iconic X-woman recently split from Black Panther, joined the Jean Grey School, and is now sporting her Mohawk again. Wood tells Marvel.com how he found a voice for Storm that resonated with fans.

“This is one of those honest answers that don’t always come  across so well in interviews, but I don’t know. [Laughs] I remember when  I started writing X-MEN [in 2012], I said in an interview something about how I  was looking forward to figuring Storm out, to discovering my version of her  voice. In the end I went with my gut, and wrote her as a flawed but determined  leader, one not afraid to make controversial moves if the end goal is a noble  one. And it worked; the reaction to my Storm was beyond overwhelming.

I often write from the gut Continue reading Storm Takes Command of Brian Wood’s X-MEN

The WOMEN of the Children of the Atom star in the latest Marvel Now X-book! Brian Wood left the (adjectiveless) X-Men book a months ago after a thrilling arc with Storm leading Psylocke, Domino, Colossus and Pixie I called a potent mix of Torchwood and X-Men.

This week – Wood is back with a brand new X-Men #1 with art by Olivier Coipel. The new book has an all-female cast: Jubilee, Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Kitty Pryde and Rachel Grey. Wood told Comics Newsarama why the new book features an all X-Women cast:

“It’s impossible to say what’s going to happen way down the road, but there has been zero talk of changing the lineup to include a male character, not from my editor on up the chain of command to [Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso]. But while the core cast of the book is these six women, this is not a title designed to be devoid of all men. I’m sure they’ll be some appearing as guests in arcs as needed… it would be sort of boring without it, and sort of a waste of chances for good character moments.

Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel launch a brand new X-Men #1 this week with an all female team – including a vampire!

Jubilee was transformed into a vampire in Curse of the Mutants and joined a cabal of fellow undead trying to control their blood lust. The fireworks generating mutant turned vampire will back with the Children of the Atom as this series begins. Brian Wood told a fan on Comic Book Resources X-Position how he will approach the mutated Jubilee.

“I’ll be the first to admit I struggled with the fact that I would be writing a vampire Jubilee — I was hoping to be able to write the “classic” one but it was not in the cards. But we, my editor Jeanine [Schaefer] and I, figured the way to go is Continue reading The Vampire of X-MEN #1

THE BOOK OF THE WEEK IS X-MEN #1!

Yes, you can probably tell I’m excited for this new mutant book and here’s why:

Brian Wood.

Olivier Coipel.

The Women of the X-Men.

Jubilee is back in fold with a baby! Jubilation’s return with this orphan launches a new mystery and inspires Storm to assemble a squad made up of Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Psylocke and Rachel Grey.

“I feel like as far as the X-Men go, the women are the X-Men,” Wood told USA Today.

“Cyclops and Wolverine are big names, but taken as a whole, the women kind of rule the franchise. If you look at the entire world as a whole, it’s the females that really dominate and are the most interesting and cool to look at. When you have a great artist drawing them, they look so amazing and always have.”

Jubilee is back but so is Continue reading Women of X-MEN #1
