Brian Michael Bendis has left Uncanny X-Men and writing Invincible Iron Man #1 but he’s not finished with the mutants yet.

The first issue of the Armored Avenger’s new ongoing was packed with revelations of what’s to come in the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now.

Marvel already revealed the Terrigenesis that’s creating Inhumans is destroying mutants. The Children of the Atom are on the fast road to extinction again.

Back when Bendis was writing New Avengers, his stories had a huge impact on the X-books (the House of M “No More Mutants” Decimation) and Norman Osborn’s Dark Reign led to the mutants leaving the mainland United States and establishing Utopia.

After making and changing mutant history Brian Michael Bendis announced he’s leaving the X-Men with a giant-sized Uncanny X-Men #600.

Bendis brought the original students of Xavier into the present in All-New X-Men and Cyclops started a revolution in Uncanny X-Men.

As the Children of the Atom feel the fallout from Professor X’s greatest secret – Bendis will exit just before Secret Wars.

The acclaimed writer explains why this was the time to leave:

“Over the course of the last few years, I will have written almost 90 issues of X-Men. That’s a good run! One of the best parts about being on X-Men was that I knew I was never going to hit Chris Claremont’s X-Men record, so I was free of whatever that is that drives such a thing,” Bendis exclusively told Comic Book Resources. The new look for the X-Man inspired a spectrum of reaction after Brian Michael Bendis revealed Kris Anka’s new design via Tumblr.

 

Whether you love or loathe – isn’t it exciting that fans are passionate about this longtime X-Man’s fate?

 

That’s the power of a writer like Bendis. I don’t like to categorize characters as A to Z because to some readers that hero is beloved.  (Somewhere someone is hoping for a Maggot resurrection!) I like to say there are front burner or marquee characters and there are back burner characters. Unfortunately some heroes are so far back they’re practically in the freezer.
