Doctor Who Meets Guinan of Star Trek

  Doctor Who (along with Amy and Rory) are on board the U.S.S. Enterprise! The Time Lord and Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s crew have teamed up in an out of this world sci-fi crossover.

  The Borg and Cybermen have formed a frightening alliance. CyberBorg are attacking the Federation. The Doctor’s mind is way off. Last issue the Doctor remembered an encounter with Kirk and Spock back in a previous life (the fourth Doctor – Tom Baker) to be precise.

  In Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #4 the Time Lord meets the timeless Guinan (played in the series by Whoopi Goldberg.)  IDW Publishing gave Comic Book Resources an exclusive peek at next week’s chapter. They have more images of the meeting.

This series has been great fun. The creative team has definitely captured the spirit of both series, each character and made a thrilling crossover that works.

Doctor Who & Star Trek Crossover Flashback! Jelly Baby?

  How to make the Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 comic book crossover even more geektastic? Jelly babies!

  The creative team behind IDW Publishing’s clever mashup gives old school fans a flashback with the fourth Doctor (and my first*) Tom Baker in an encounter with Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scotty.

  Issue #3 takes us right into the action as the eleventh Doctor is on the bridge of the Enterprise with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and crew. The Enterprise is on the run from an armada of Borg cubes and Cybermen warships. What Picard sees being transmitted from the lead Borg cube is bizarre behavior even for the alien assimilators.

  Peering into the Starfleet database reveals images of Cybermen and a curly haired man sporting a hat and scarf! The current Doctor’s violent reaction to the images triggers a flashback and away we go. Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy and Mr. Scott are on an away mission where the humans seem zombified, robot warriors attack and a friendly stranger in hat, scarf and offering jelly babies saves the day. The writing and art style change to reflect the flashback feel of the tale within a tale. The trip back shows that the Cybermen have been in the Trek universe for a long time and hints at the origin of the Borg/Cybermen alliance that’s threatening the Federation now.

  The writers succeed again at capturing the spirit of the classic characters and how they would act and interact. I have to thank the writers for making me remember the Cybermen’s weakness. How could I have forgotten?

  Back to the future present the Time Lord is puzzled that he keeps remembering things he didn’t remember like when he recognized Worf as a Klington even though he’d never encountered one before…or did he? As Picard grows suspicious of the eleventh Doctor’s story he calls on an ancient ally to help determine the truth.

  I’m excited to see that encounter next issue! *To be even more specific – my first Doctor Who episode was The Pirate Planet!

Doctor Who Meets the Enterprise Crew

  This is not a simulation malfunction! Two of science fiction’s greatest icons are together in a comic book crossover.

  Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #2 is out this week from IDW publishing. Chapter Two begins with an extended detour to a Federation world where a routine visit turns into a near disaster under an alien ocean for Riker, Worf and Data. We meet a new species, learn of Starfleet’s desperate deal with them and hints of what time (as in Trek continuity) this tale takes place. Chapter One began with the Doctor, Amy and Rory’s adventure in ancient Egypt. I’m assuming these jaunts will tie into the main story.

  The Enterprise crew recover from the away mission with a visit to the holodeck and a Dixon Hill program. It’s not too long before a police box of intruders appears thinking they’ve traveled to old world San Francisco. The interplay between the Doctor, his companions and the Enterprise crew is clever and charming. The writers capture the essence of these beloved characters while carefully sowing the seeds that something is very wrong.

  Before the Time Lord and Captain Picard can dive into the mystery the Enterprise is warping to a Federation world under attack from the Borg and the Cybermen. Aside from the detour this issue delivers the fun and charm I was expecting and the stage is set for a great crossover. The preview of issue #3 will really engage even older old school fans of Who and Trek!

The Borg attack a Federation planet but they are not alone. The Cybermen are with them. This frightening alliance can only mean one thing…crossover! IDW Publishing phase Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation together in a new series. I said “make it so” to the premiere issue. 

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #2 is out this week. The Doctor, Amy and Rory beam aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. Will Captain Picard mistake the Time Lord for a member of the Q Continuum? You could see how that might happen! Everyone knows the joke about the wearing red means you’ll soon be dead. Mike Johnson, Stephen Molnar and Tim Bradstreet create a special tale just for the Redshirts…and those who love them. Star Trek #13 is a new stand-alone story of life on the Enterprise told through the eyes of a redshirt.

  This Redshirt’s Tale joins the previously announced Star Trek: The Next Generation: Hive limited series by veteran Trek writer/producer Brannon Braga. A future where the Borg control the galaxy the only hope is Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. But how can Picard save the day when Locutus rules this dark future?

  Now this is an assimilation you might enjoy! Doctor Who, Amy and Rory are about to meet the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise! Star Trek: The Next Generaton/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 is a new comic book from IDW Publishing. Issue #1 featured an attack on a Federation world by Borg with Cybermen.

 

  io9 has a first look at issue #5. Amy Pond, Deanna Troi and Dr. Beverly Crusher share one cover. The Time Lord and Captain Picard are seen peering out of the Tardis on another.

A Time Lord Walks Into a Star Trek Bar…

  Two sci-fi icons are phased together in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Doctor Who: Assimilation2 from IDW Comics. I had a Trek fan at work (who doesn’t read comics) ask how can they pull this off…this isn’t even the same universe!”

  He even asked “why the blue police box?” I sighed and explained.

 

  Back to Assimilation2

  Does this geek think you engage? YES. I won’t spoil but here are some highlights.

  A Federation world (featuring a big nod to Star Trek: The Motion Picture if you can believe it) is under assault from the Borg but this attack is unprecedented. The dreaded assimilators of the universe are attacking with Cybermen. Yes, two of the most feared races of each competing universe have formed an unholy alliance.

 The action cuts to ancient Egypt where the eleventh doctor, Amy and Rory are on the run after a different kind of alien threat when the Time Lord gets a vision of his old enemies. The trio is soon in the Tardis and in the 24th century about to engage the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The creative team capture the spirit of Trek and Who in each separate story thread and I can’t wait to see how they spin this crossover. I can imagine Captain Picard mistaking the Doctor for a member of the Q Continuum! 

Issue one of this is a fun read with gorgeous art and sets up the action of how the crews will meet and the mystery of the Borg and Cyberman union was born.

P.S. Seeing the Doctor in Egypt brought memories of one of my favorite Tom Baker serials: The Pyramids of Mars. Mr. Moffat, if you’re looking to reboot a classic villain I humbly request to you revisit this classic.
