Emerald City Comicon Calls on The Voice of Batman

Emerald City Comicon announced the addition of two classic voice actors to this year’s event!

Kevin Conroy is best known as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman: The Animated Series, a role he still plays in games and films from Justice League to Batman: Arkham City.

Maurice LeMarche is known for his work as The Brain in Pinky and the Brain, Destro on G.I. Joe, Kif Kroker on Futurama and many more.

For the impressive list of media guests, comic book writers and artists and other voice actors coming to Seattle visit Emerald City Comicon.

Love for Lady Shiva

With the announcement of six new titles from the DC Comics The New 52 Second Wave and a new look the trailer for Haywire – it came to me like a geekasm!

Gail Simone on a new Lady Shiva series and Haywire star Gina Carano playing the master assassin in the next Batman film…oh yeah….back to the comic book series idea…

Lady Shiva is one of the deadliest assassins in the DC Universe. Shiva has fought with and against or trained a who’s who including Batman, Cassandra Cain, Black Canary, Tim Drake, Ra’s Al Ghul, the League of Assassins, and the Brotherhood of the Fist.

Gail Simone’s reel (because her writing is downright cinematic) features Birds of Prey, Secret Six and the dynamic new Batgirl. I don’t think the martial arts grandmaster has appeared in the New 52 yet and I think Simone is the perfect choice to unleash Lady Shiva on DC’s New 52 underworld.

Dark Knight Rises Covers EW

courtesy Entertainment Weekly

This image gave me a geeky chill! Christian Bale as Batman on the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly! The feature will include a new Christopher Nolan interview. The online tease features what some Batfans might consider at spoiler so just in case….

ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

POSSIBLE SPOILER!

– Nolan tells EW that the last chapter of his cinematic saga explores the ramifications of The Dark Knight’s chilling climax, in which Batman and super-cop Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) hatch a conspiracy to cover up the sins of Gotham City’s so-called “white knight,” the late Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart). Nolan also discusses the potential political subtext of Rises.

I posted earlier that I was curious about why Bane was holding a photo of Harvey Dent in the Empire Magazine story…maybe we’ll receive a new clue to that puzzle this week.

Batman: Night of the Owls

Batman #8 courtesy DC The Source

Batman: Night of the Owls will be the first cross-over of the DC New 52 era starting in Batman #8 in May and continuing in Detective Comics.

DC’s announced a series of Batman back-up stories about the Court of Owls leading up to the big event.

Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, Action Comics, Men of War, All-Star Western will increase in price to $3.99 per issue.

DC Executive John Rood told Comics Newsarama there was “a story reason” for the price increase and the publisher is adding pages to the Bat titles.

Batman Back-up Stories Reveal Gotham’s Secret History

One of my favorite new DC New 52 series is Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. Batman is plagued by the Court of Owls and the Talon, their enforcer. Snyder’s revealed the entwined dark history of his secret society, Bruce Wayne’s family and Gotham City.

Batman #8 will feature the first of a series of back-up stories exploring the secret group’s past and agenda. The back-up tales will unite Snyder with his American Vampire partner Rafael Albuquerque.

“The first backup, in issue eight will give a sense of the terrifying scope of the Court of Owls’ attack on Gotham. This really will be the first shot in a war for the soul of Gotham City,” said Snyder. “And then, starting in issue nine, we’ll begin a three part story called ‘The Fall of the House of Wayne’ that will investigate the secret history of the Court of Owls and its relationship to the Wayne family – particularly to Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce’s parents. The story will be told from the point of view of Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred’s father, and offer some big surprises and shocks about the forces that shaped the bat-mythology as we know it. Can’t wait for you all to see these stories!”

Snyder will co-write these stories with James Tynion IV.

“I’m also excited to be co-writing with my friend, James Tynion IV, a young writer I’m extremely excited about. Especially in the spirit of the New 52, it’s a real thrill to get to give someone new and talented a chance to get his foot in the door, and James is a writer to watch and expect great things from!”

The back-up stories will build up to May’s huge cross-over with all the Batman titles,  Night of the Owls, which will reveal the impact of the society’s master plan.

You can find more preview images and Snyder’s interview on DC’s The Source.

Tom Hardy’s Challenge of Playing Bane

The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster courtesy Warner Brothers

Tom Hardy tells The Mirror one of the biggest challenge of playing the villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises is not being a nice guy.

“It’s such an amazing cast to work alongside, they are all so talented,” Hardy told The Mirror. “I loved being able to play a baddie and, coming from East Sheen in South-West London, that doesn’t come easily to me. I actually had to work on not being very nice. I’m genuinely a nice guy.”

Thanks to Comic Book Resources and their comic reel for the story.

If you want to see Tom Hardy as a nice guy but tough competitor check out one of the best movies of the year Warrior.

Catwoman’s Claws in The Dark Knight Rises

Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Image Courtesy Screen Rant

Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman will have a nasty secret hidden in her costume according to an upcoming interview in L.A. Times Hero Complex.

“I love the costume… I love the costume because everything has a purpose, nothing is in place for fantasy’s sake, and that’s the case with everything in Christopher Nolan’s Gotham City.” Hathaway says.

The publisher describes Catwoman’s boots with “…stiletto heels that, on closer inspection, turn out to have serrated edges capable of leaving nasty claw marks in a fight.”

Earlier Hathaway talked about how her portrayal of Catwoman will not be influenced by previous Catwomen but based on Nolan’s Gotham.

This latest on-screen version of Catwoman looks similar to the comic counterpart from Ed Brubaker’s run on the title – minus the hair.

Batman’s Villain Problem

I eagerly awaited The Dark Knight Rises IMAX prologue and new trailer. They looked stunning but the only critique was not being able to understand what Bane was saying.

The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster courtesy Warner Brothers

Batfans are speaking out and Warner Brothers appears to be listening. According to Heat Vision of The Hollywood Reporter the studio is asking Christopher Nolan to alter the sound so audiences can better understand the main villain more clearly. The director responded that he will alter the sound slightly.

Bane wears a mask because he’s inhaling a drug that gives him super strength. In the comics the drug is called Venom.

Opinion – While I admit it was difficult to understand Bane in the prologue and trailer – there’s no question about the physical presence of Tom Hardy. Even in a mask, the actor exudes menace. Batfans- have faith in Nolan.
