Avengers vs X-Men Rematch: Rogue & Ms. Marvel’s Rumble

X-Men Legacy #269 courtesy Marvel.com

This week delivers one of the most eagerly awaited fights in the Avengers vs. X-Men series so far: Rogue vs. Ms. Marvel. These heroines with a history throw down in this week’s X-Men Legacy #269.

Back in the day Rogue was to be a bad girl under orders from her foster mother Mystique. Rogue’s first fight with Carol Danvers had dramatic consequences for both women. Rogue permanently absorbed Ms. Marvel’s powers and for years lived with Carol Danvers inside her fractured mind.  Rogue eventually left Mystique to ask Professor X for help and began her road to redemption. Ms. Marvel was comatose for years but thanks to the Professor she recovered and eventually became a high-flying hero again.

In X-Men Legacy 266 and 267 an Avengers squad arrived at the Jean Grey School and fighting erupted. Rogue was reminded of what her mutant power can do…if she’s pushed hard enough. The fight with She-Hulk was just a warm-up. The tragic consequences and bad blood of their past is sure to be a factor as Rogue and Carol battle again. Christos Gage and David Baldeon bring you this AvX rematch in X-Men Legacy #269 out this week.

Who do you want to win this battle? I love ’em both.

Avengers Vs. X-Men: Adam Kubert’s Phoenix Five

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 courtesy Marvel.com

If you were the side of the X-Men before AvX…are you still? I have to ask myself given Scott’s actions. Cyclops has now declared “No More Avengers.” The X-Men will become hero hunters and Avengers will be imprisoned in upcoming chapters.

Marvel.com revealed Adam Kubert’s variant cover for Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 showcasing the fiery and regal Phoenix Five (Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik, Namor.) Scott is holding Captain America’s shield.

Here’s the description for the issue:

“The chase comes to a head in Wakanda, as the sovereign nation becomes the target of an out-of-control Namor! Will the onslaught of the powered-up Sub-Mariner overwhelm the Avengers? The answer – and a shocking truth about the X-Men – is revealed”

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 by Brian Michael Bendis and Adam Kubert arrives July 18th.

Some of my AvX theories are blown now. I had suspected the overzealous Cyclops was under the influence of the Void but wouldn’t the Phoenix have burned that out of him? It’s ironic the future the X-Men wanted to avoid (Days of Future Past) is now the present but they are the hunters instead of Sentinels.

Avengers Vs X-Men Detour Into Sinister World

Uncanny X-Men #14 courtesy Marvel

The Phoenix Five are remaking the Earth into a peaceful paradise safe for mutant and man…unless you’re an Avenger. Mister Sinister has created his own world under the Earth…and he’s ready welcome Cyclops.

Kieron Gillen gives us a strange detour from the main action of the Avengers vs X-Men conflict in Uncanny X-Men #14. Mister Sinister was obsessed with genetics of the mutant race for years. Sinister is his own race now. Gillen has definitely created his own brilliant take on the old school bad guy. He’s no longer a mad scientist but a mad narcissist. Could we call him an ego-sexual?

Dustin Weaver is a perfect choice to craft this bizarre fairy tale world. Weaver created the historical science fantasy world of the Eternal City in SHIELD with Jonathan Hickman. The artist gives us a haunting new underworld in Sinister’s image and populated by variations of the classic X-Men villain. The faded palette used by colorist Jim Charalampidis is an excellent choice for this Victorian era underworld.

Sinister has manipulated Scott Summers for decades. Nathaniel Essex knows the Phoenix-empowered Cyclops will eventually come to burn him away. Sinister has an army of surprises for his old enemy. I eagerly await the showdown.

AVX: Daredevil Against Psylocke!

AvX: Vs. #4 courtesy Marvel.com

The Man Without Fear against the X-Men’s psychic ninja! Daredevil and Psylocke’s fight goes into overtime in AvX: Vs #4. Marvel.com revealed the cover and Brandon Peterson’s interior art.

AvX: Vs. #4 courtesy Marvel.com

Rick Remender writes the latest “all fights” issue. If you’ve read his Uncanny X-Force you know Remender really knows how to write Betsy Braddock. The character really evolved during The Dark Angel Saga. Betsy has a darker, harder edge. If Psylocke can gut her one-time lover expect Matt to feel the pain. I’m excited to see how this billy club to psychic knife fight will play out.

AvX: Vs. #4 courtesy Marvel.com

Seeing Brandon Peterson’s work takes me back to the 90’s when he was teamed with Fabian Nicieza on the X-Men book. Peterson drew Psylocke and her “twin” Revanche.

AvX: Vs. #4 courtesy Marvel.com

AvX: Vs #4 features not one but two fights. The other match picks up from Remender’s Secret Avengers AvX tie-in story with Thor against the Phoenix Force with art by Kaare Andrews.

Avengers vs. X-Men: Black Widow or Magik

AvX Vs #3 courtesy Marvel

AvX: Vs. #3 gives you more of the battle you didn’t see in Avengers vs. X-Men. Two Russian femme fatales face off! Black Widow is Marvel’s deadliest super spy. Magik is a mutant sorceress who can access the power of a dimension of demons. Christopher Yost, Terry and Rachel Dodson give you more of the battle of the Russian born heroines.

Let me say first that I loved Marvel’s The Avengers. I commend Joss Whedon for making the Black Widow work. Natasha is known for her Widow’s Bite. We kind of saw in the movie but it was never blatantly referenced. Black Widow is armed with bracelets that fire energy blasts – her bite. She kind of blasted one of the Chitauri in the big battle. In this AvX Vs. #3 preview art we see Natasha use her blasters.

I was reminded of that my by friend and fan Mitch and when I saw this awesome interior preview art (courtesy of Comic Book Resources in a recent Axel-In-Charge column) of AvX Vs #3 by Terry Dodson. In this issue of the ‘all fights’ series the Russian superspy takes on the Russian mutant sorceress.

Natasha vs Illyana doesn’t seem like a fair fight. Magik is the queen of a demon dimension. These preview pages don’t look good for Natasha but never underestimate the fighting and survival skills of the Widow.Ultimately I want the X-Men to win but I’m picking Natasha to win this one.

This issue also features Magik’s big brother, Colossus, against Ben Grimm of the Fantastic Four in a tale by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness.

SERIOUSLY

HERE IT COMES

OK – I DID WARN YOU!

Introducing the Phoenix Five: Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus and Magik are the hosts of the Phoenix Force. According to Marvel.com the mission is “to remake the Marvel Universe in their image.”

Avengers vs X-Men #6 courtesy Marvel

Jonathan Hickman and Olivier Coipel give us Pax Utopia through the eyes of the Phoenix Five in Avengers vs. X-Men #6 out in two weeks.

So what does this mean? Here are some burning questions:

Did the Phoenix burn the Cyttorak power out of Colossus?

Does this No More Avengers mean this new world is similar to House of M?

Will the other X-Men side with (if they even exist anymore) Wolverine and the Avengers?

Avengers vs X-Men #6 courtesy Marvel

Given the Phoenix/Jean history with Emma Frost – will the White Queen survive?

What about the Generation Hope kids? Were the Five Lights destined to host the Phoenix or will these kids play a role?

There’s a good reason we saw Professor X and Legion? Time for Charles to get back in the game and possibly reclaim leadership of the mutant race.

Scarlet Witch has been on the sidelines – Will the mutant who can warp reality and command chaos magic take on the Phoenix Force?

  Hope?
