Doctor Who Meets the Enterprise Crew

  This is not a simulation malfunction! Two of science fiction’s greatest icons are together in a comic book crossover.

  Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #2 is out this week from IDW publishing. Chapter Two begins with an extended detour to a Federation world where a routine visit turns into a near disaster under an alien ocean for Riker, Worf and Data. We meet a new species, learn of Starfleet’s desperate deal with them and hints of what time (as in Trek continuity) this tale takes place. Chapter One began with the Doctor, Amy and Rory’s adventure in ancient Egypt. I’m assuming these jaunts will tie into the main story.

  The Enterprise crew recover from the away mission with a visit to the holodeck and a Dixon Hill program. It’s not too long before a police box of intruders appears thinking they’ve traveled to old world San Francisco. The interplay between the Doctor, his companions and the Enterprise crew is clever and charming. The writers capture the essence of these beloved characters while carefully sowing the seeds that something is very wrong.

  Before the Time Lord and Captain Picard can dive into the mystery the Enterprise is warping to a Federation world under attack from the Borg and the Cybermen. Aside from the detour this issue delivers the fun and charm I was expecting and the stage is set for a great crossover. The preview of issue #3 will really engage even older old school fans of Who and Trek!

The Borg attack a Federation planet but they are not alone. The Cybermen are with them. This frightening alliance can only mean one thing…crossover! IDW Publishing phase Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation together in a new series. I said “make it so” to the premiere issue. 

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #2 is out this week. The Doctor, Amy and Rory beam aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. Will Captain Picard mistake the Time Lord for a member of the Q Continuum? You could see how that might happen!   Now this is an assimilation you might enjoy! Doctor Who, Amy and Rory are about to meet the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise! Star Trek: The Next Generaton/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 is a new comic book from IDW Publishing. Issue #1 featured an attack on a Federation world by Borg with Cybermen.

 

  io9 has a first look at issue #5. Amy Pond, Deanna Troi and Dr. Beverly Crusher share one cover. The Time Lord and Captain Picard are seen peering out of the Tardis on another.

A Time Lord Walks Into a Star Trek Bar…

  Two sci-fi icons are phased together in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Doctor Who: Assimilation2 from IDW Comics. I had a Trek fan at work (who doesn’t read comics) ask how can they pull this off…this isn’t even the same universe!”

  He even asked “why the blue police box?” I sighed and explained.

  Does this geek think you engage? YES. I won’t spoil but here are some highlights.

  A Federation world (featuring a big nod to Star Trek: The Motion Picture if you can believe it) is under assault from the Borg but this attack is unprecedented. The dreaded assimilators of the universe are attacking with Cybermen. Yes, two of the most feared races of each competing universe have formed an unholy alliance.

 The action cuts to ancient Egypt where the eleventh doctor, Amy and Rory are on the run after a different kind of alien threat when the Time Lord gets a vision of his old enemies. The trio is soon in the Tardis and in the 24th century about to engage the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The creative team capture the spirit of Trek and Who in each separate story thread and I can’t wait to see how they spin this crossover. I can imagine Captain Picard mistaking the Doctor for a member of the Q Continuum! 

Issue one of this is a fun read with gorgeous art and sets up the action of how the crews will meet and the mystery of the Borg and Cyberman union was born.

P.S. Seeing the Doctor in Egypt brought memories of one of my favorite Tom Baker serials: The Pyramids of Mars. Mr. Moffat, if you’re looking to reboot a classic villain I humbly request to you revisit this classic.
