Marvel teased “Earth’s Mightiest Kiss” and a romance between the new Captain America (Sam Wilson) and Thor (Jane Foster) in early 2016.

This All-New, All-Different Avengers hookup is the latest surprising superhero romance. Wilson has emerged from sidekick/supporting hero to Marvel leading man. Foster’s transformation from Thor’s girlfriend to well…THOR!…is even more dramatic and fans love it but will they embrace this new power couple? How will Cap and Jane balance saving the planet with a complicated relationship? Will they have a happy ending?

Here are surprising super power couples that prove super powers don’t exactly leading to a storybook ending:

Superman and Wonder Woman.

The Man of Steel. The Amazon Princess. When DC Comics relaunched as The New 52 in 2011, a new continuity meant new beginnings for classic characters. Superman was no longer married to Lois Lane and in Justice League #12, Superman and Wonder Woman shared a passionate kiss which blossomed into a romantic relationship and their own title together. Superman is not the Man of Steel he used to be. Diana is sticking with him, even teaming up with Lois Lane to investigate new threats to Clark, as he tries to restore his power.

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. She was a former superhero turned private investigator. He was the hero for hire. The two became friends during her series Alias by Brian Michael Bendis. Luke joined the New Avengers by Bendis and they became a fan-favorite couple who married and have a daughter. Luke and Jessica are still together trying to balance saving the day with raising a little girl. Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter are playing the couple in Marvel/Netflix series.

Vision and Scarlet Witch. She wields chaos magic and reality warping powers. He is an android on a journey to become more  human. Wanda and Vision’s marriage and the aftermath was filled with tragedy but they are still one of the Avengers longest running power couples. The pair were married for more than a decade and shared a series together and two children – kinda. (It’s complicated…very complicated.) Vision and Wanda were literally torn apart. Vision was seized and deconstructed by the government. Both heroes will star in their own solo series as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now with Vision on the new Avengers team too.

Cyclops and Emma Frost. He was Professor X’s heir apparent and often an uptight boy scout. She was a former villain. Scott and Emma shared a relentless need to protect other mutants from enemies who would hate and hunt them. When Grant Morrison took over the mutant franchise, he began the deconstruction of Scott and Jean Grey and building of Scott and Emma into the ultimate New X-Men power couple. After years of marriage, Scott began a psychic affair with Emma while fans kept wanting Jean to just be with Wolverine finally. In the end, Wolverine had to kill a Phoenix possessed Jean but this wasn’t the end of her. Jean reached out from beyond to push Scott and Emma into being together. The Scott/Emma romance officially began with Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run and on through the Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction era. Scott and Emma’s romance ended as a result of his Phoenix possession in Avengers vs X-Men which left both of them with broken powers. Emma remained at Scott’s side in his Uncanny X-Men: Revolution even as she saw the return of Jean Grey, a younger original version from the past. We may learn the fate of Scott and Jean in the upcoming Uncanny X-Men #600 by Bendis but both heroes are MIA from the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now X-books so far.

Wolverine and Storm. Years of friendship and attraction suddenly evolved into a brief but passionate romance. Ororo reached a breaking point after the drama of Avengers vs X-Men and the end of her marriage to Black Panther and turned to Logan. The X-Men romance was not meant to be. Logan lost his mutant power and died in one final adventure. Will Old Man Logan remember his romance with Ororo when they reunite in Extraordinary X-Men?
