SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not read Uncanny Avengers #4 yet then stop reading now.

Seriously.

Here it comes.

OK.

A reborn Red Skull stole the brain of Professor X and used it as the ultimate mind control weapon to trigger a wave of anti-mutant violence. Captain America, Wolverine, Thor, Rogue, Havok and Scarlet Witch saved the day but then Rick Remender cut into the future with team members on the run from…Onslaught?!?

Yes, the 90’s villain is back again.

Onslaught was a major X-Men event in 1996 that would affect the entire Marvel Universe leading to the “Heroes Reborn” relaunch. Onslaught was revealed to be a manifestation of Professor Xavier’s dark side after the telepath mindwiped Magneto during the Fatal Attractions storyline. Onslaught appeared at the title character of two mini-series.

The epilogue of this week’s issue jumped 3 months later to reveal the Red Skull has evolved into Onslaught. I guess that’s what Johann gets to stealing the Professor’s brain but this is certainly ominous for the Uncanny Avengers and entire Marvel Universe.

The concept some fans may love to hate is back but in the hands fo fan-favorite writer Rick Remender. The writer tells Comics Newsarama why Onslaught:

“As we were building the story we were looking for the escalation for the fourth arc, the story that takes place in the second year, and I wanted something recognizable that naturally fit with our plans. It was sitting right in front of me but I never saw it; editor Tom Brevoort pointed out to me that Onslaught was the perfect fit.

From there about another hundred ideas bubbled up and it fit perfectly with the other plans that we had. It’s going to be an entirely different thing than what we saw in the ’90s, an entirely different character with an entirely different set of motives. I don’t want to give much else away — I think people know how the original Onslaught came into being, and that it has a direct connection to Charles Xavier.”

Ragnarok Now is the next arc of Uncanny Avengers featuring Kang and Apocaplyse!

Another evil blast from the past recently made a comeback in Wolverine and the X-Men. For that story here’s the link.
