DC Comics recruited acclaimed cartoonist Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints) to continue the adventures of Superman after Convergence.
Geoff Johns, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson wrapped up their arc with huge changes for the Man of Steel including new powers, a new costume and a big revelation to a member of the cast.
Is Superman getting a super haircut?
Is the iconic Clark Kent curl history?
Take a look at this cover for Superman #41 – the first issue by Yang and Romita, Jr.
As you can see Superman’s hairstyle is different.
Superman is the ultimate outsider. He’s an all-powerful alien who took a human guise to live among us. Kal El is also an immigrant – something Yang will explore his take on the icon:
“That’s just an essential part of the character. And as I’m writing, what I’m expecting is that it will come out organically. Superman has been around for so long; he’s been around for, what, eight decades now? And he goes through these different eras where different aspects of who he is get emphasized. I think at the core of him is the idea of the immigrant experience. His creators were two children of Jewish immigrants. And embedded in his origin story is this idea of negotiating between two cultures and trying to take two halves of himself and create something that’s whole and unified. I’m hoping what will happen is as we build our narrative, that aspect will come out organically,” Yang told The Hero Complex.
Yang confirmed he will continue to explore Superman’s new super flare power that strips him of his abilities for a period if he uses it and confesses Jimmy Olsen is his favorite supporting character.
You may remember Clark/Superman revealed his true identity to Jimmy in the final panel of Superman #40.
How the big secret affects the classic friendship will be part of the new team’s run.
