SUPERMAN Mystery, Secrets and Family Drama

Superman #1 is new beginning for a familiar and most welcome Man of Steel.

The events of Convergence (and perhaps an even more sinister force) bring the Clark who married Lois Lane and fought Doomsday back to his starring role as the main Superman of the DC Universe. This Superman has a new role: father.

Peter J. Tomasi crafted the Final Days of Superman and reunites with Batman and Robin collaborator Patrick Gleason for this new series. Tomasi and Gleason co-write with Gleason and inker Mick Gray on art. The team picks up on elements from the Superman: Rebirth one-shot, the final arc of The New 52 series and the big mystery introduced in DC Universe Rebirth #1.

The post-Crisis Superman and his wife Lois with their son Jon are living as the “Smith” family on a rural farm. In an emotional debut, Tomasi and Gleason set the stage for family drama and ties to the bigger mystery threatening the entire DC Universe.

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not read Superman #1 yet stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Clark officially accepts his role as Superman in this world after a visit to the grave he secretly dug for the recently deceases New 52 counterpart. Clark gets rid of the black costume and beard and embraces the iconic costume fans love.

This where Clark makes a silent mention of Mister Oz, the mystery man who appeared in DC Universe: Rebirth #1 telling him and his family are not who they think they are. The scene turns even more ominous when Clark places his hand on the grave leaving behind a blue-hued glowing handprint behind. Is this a clue that could confirm Doctor Manhattan’s reality altering manipulations hinted at in the one-shot?

Jon breaks his promise to not use his powers in an effort to save his pet cat and he doen’t tell his parents. The demonstration of power is seen by a young girl who turns out to be the new neighbor’s daughter who keeps quiet about what she witnessed. Burdened by his secret, Jon lashes out at his parents about living a lie then is ordered to his room.

Jon sees his father in Superman costume talking with Wonder Woman and Batman then the Man of Steel appears in the bedroom doorway ordering Jon to come with him.

Will Clark reveal his Super Son to the world or will he keep Jon secret?

What plans does the former Watchman have for the Man of Steel?

Superman #2 arrives July 2nd. Jon and Damian Wayne will eventually meet and star in a Super Sons book later this year.
