Happy Valentine’s Day.

Where is the love?

As we approach the big romantic holiday some of the most iconic couples in comic books are apart. Comics always have a soap opera element but it’s hard to find a beloved super couple on solid ground but there’s always hope for a romantic reunion.

Superhero love is constantly tested by powerful villains, evil conspiracies, the end of the multiverse, demonic possessions, alien invasions and sometimes…psychic cheating?

Here’s a look at the most famous Marvel comics super couples and the status of their romance as we celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Let’s begin one of the most complicated love triangles in the X-Men mythos:

Cyclops and Jean Grey and Emma Frost. It’s complicated…really complicated!

Jean Grey is still dead. The original young Jean from the past stayed in the present and now fights for mutant survival in Extraordinary X-Men. Original young Cyclops is almost like a folk hero and on the road in All-New X-Men. Scott Summers is reported to be dead after attacking the Inhumans and Emma Frost is still missing in action in the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now. Scott cheated on Jean with Emma (psychically not physically) leading to the longtime super couple breakup. Now no one the X-Men’s passionate triangle is living a happily ever after.

Kitty Pryde and Colossus and Star-Lord.

Death, demonic possession, alien invasions and evil mutants pushed and tore apart Kitty and Peter. The two were at their most passionate peak when Colossus returned from the dead thanks to Joss Whedon. Kitty found a new long-distance love with the Guardians of the Galaxy leader. Just when Peter proposed to Kitty after saving the universe, Secret Wars destroyed the multiverse. In the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now, the lovers are estranged as he rules an empire and Kitty is the new Star-Lord in Guardians. Peter is on Earth with the Extraordinary X-Men after a brief fling with Domino. In space everyone can hear you sigh. Expect a Quill and Kitty reunion but the wedding may never happen. Colossus is a single man again but at least ex-lover Kitty helped him make up with estranged sister Magik before taking off for outer space.

Reed Richards and Susan Storm Richards.

The Fantastic Four are no more…for now. Because this reveals the finale of Secret Wars here’s a Spoiler Alert in case you have not read the conclusion.

Here it comes…

Mister Fantastic defeated Doctor Doom and gave his arch enemy a second chance with the birth of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now. In ashes of Battleworld, the son of Reed and Sue and Molecule Man began creating a new Marvel multiverse. While Johnny and Ben emerged in the new Marvel now with new teams, Reed and Sue took their kids into the unknown exploring the brand new universes. Marvel’s first power couple reunited in a fitting and “fantastic” new beginning.

Hope springs?

Rogue and Gambit.

She steals powers. He steals…everything. Rogue is a member of the Uncanny Avengers now and Gambit recently made his Marvel comeback (or was it really Remy) in the most recent issue. The Cajun scoundrel and the Southern voiced knockout who is untouchable always a perfectly impossible couple. Remy and Rogue have always been the ultimate symbol of unrequited, undeniable love and attraction. The smoldering stopped after the X-Men learned of Remy’s dark secret (he worked for Mister Sinister and played a role in the Mutant Massace) but will the slow burn fire up again after a recent reunion…and will they ever rejoin the X-Men?

Captain America and Thor?

Sam Wilson and Jane Foster share a kiss in the most recent issue of All-New, All-Different Avengers. Is the beginning of a new power couple? Can love bloom as Civil War II builds up in 2016?

Storm and Forge?

Storm’s marriage to Black Panther was a casualty of the Avengers vs X-Men war, her lover Wolverine died but old love Forge has regained his sanity and working as her tech support in Extraordinary X-Men. Can love bloom again amid the fight against Mister Sinister, demons and the extinction of the mutant race?

Northstar and Kyle?

Marvel’s most famous GLBT hero are still married but off the radar right now. Marriage between mutant hero and ordinary human has been a challenge. Here’s hoping Jean-Paul soon turns up again in the current X-books with Kyle.
