If you have not seen this week’s Supergirl premiere stop reading now.
Seriously.
OK.
Here it comes.
Kara and Hank Henshaw/Martian Manhunter chase a crashing spaceship. Given the spacecraft and passenger’s physiology, Kara believes this man who fell to Earth is a Kryptonian. The ship passed through what Kara’s father called a zone where time passed a a different speed. Producers already revealed this mystery man is Mon-El, a man from the future with powers similar to Superman. In the comics, Mon-El is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the 30th century.
The near destruction of another experimental spaceship reunites Superman and Supergirl as the cousins both come to the rescue. While Kal-El is in National City, Clark Kent starts investigating leading to a reunion with Cat Grant. Clark and Cat share a past as she asks about his relationship with Lois and refers to Lex Luthor being in prison.
The spaceship hijacking is no accident. John Corben is the man behind it. Corben is a master assassin out to kill Lena Luthor, who claims to want to right the wrongs committed by her criminal mastermind Lex. Kal and Kara save lives while saving Lena from Corben’s assassination attempts linked to Lex. It’s Lena that kills her potential killer. Is Lex really trying to kill her sister from behind bars?
When Kara brings Superman back to the newly revealed D.E.O. headquarters, most of the team become fanboys and fangirls starry eyed for her super cousin except for an instant tension between Kal and Martian Manhunter.
Kara’s sister finally gets the truth behind J’onn and Kal. Martian Manhunter reveals he discovered kryptonite on Earth, Superman wanted to destroy it but J’onn seized it thinking it might be needed as a weapon against Kryptonians.
The super cousins save the day but wait for it…an evil epilogue:
Corben is not dead. He’s captured by a mystery woman (Brenda Strong) who gives him a life or death ulitmatum, reveals he’s in Project Cadmus (the facility that experiments on aliens to weaponize them for military purposes) and the assassin becomes the future super villain Metallo.
The big burning questions:
We never returned to the Krytonian mystery man. Is Mon-El really a man from tomorrow? Will become Kara’s enemy or ally?
In comics Metallo is a cyborg powered by Kryptonite. Does Cadmus seize Henshaw’s Kryptonite to create the super villain? Will it further divide Kal and J’onn leaving to Superman’s exit?
Who is the mystery woman at Cadmus? Is she really behind the attempts to eliminate Lena? Is she working for Lex?
Project Cadmus was mentioned in the Manhunter origin season one episode. Jeremiah Danvers is being held there- will be be freed?
Who is this Superman?
Hoechlin’s Superman is not the current cinematic Man of Steel. If you’re a fan of the wholesome boy scout Superman of Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh starring films, Smallville and Lois and Clark: New Adventures of Superman television series then you will love this new version of the iconic hero.
M-V-P Moment:
Calista Flockhart channels Miranda Priestley from The Devil Wears Prada and Gene Hackman’s cinematic Luthor especially as she yells at her new assistant, “Miss Tessmacher!!!” Kara and Cat’s interactions over the episode lead to a new beginnings for Danvers, a relationship ending while leaving Cat is left pondering her future (leading to Flockhart having a more limited role on the series.)
After a fast-paced premiered filled with action, humor, heart and just enough hints of nostalgia for old school fans, the new season of Supergirl looks to soar to new heights.
