STORM, CYCLOPS And FUTURE Of X-MEN

A shakeup among the X-Men as one leader vanishes and one rises as the mutant race faces a new crisis.

Cyclops and Storm have been the core leaders of the X-Men teams. Wolverine and Emma Frost have been co-leaders and co-headmasters but it’s always Scott and Ororo that are the ultimate commanders of Xavier’s legacy.

When Extraordinary X-Men #1 arrives, a new enemy is striking mutants. The Children of the Atom have been targets of hate, prejudice and extremism but this enemy is genetic. The Terrigenesis Cloud creating new Inhumans is sterilizing and wiping out mutants.

Scott Summers, Emma Frost and other mutants are MIA so Storm leads a new team to save as many mutants as they can while facing old enemies and potential new rivals in the Inhumans.

Jeff Lemire is writing the new flagship X-book. How will he use these two classic leaders:

“Cyclops’ fate and the mystery of what happened to him is a very big part of what we have planned. I would never simply dismiss or eliminate a character as important as Scott. His fate and actions may not be fully revealed in the first issue, or even first arc, but rest assured it is a major aspect of story.” Lemire told Comic Book Resources.

With Scott gone, Ororo is alone at the top.

“Storm will essentially be leading mutantkind now. This is a massive responsibility. The survival of an entire species rests on her shoulders. And no matter how competent or fit for that role she may be, it will still weigh heavily on her. There will be moments of self-doubt. But Ororo feels like she can’t show that doubt and the burden leadership is taking on her to the others. She thinks, rightly or wrongly, that she needs to be the rock that they can all rely on.” Lemire continued on X-Position.

“As the series begins, Storm has separated herself form the others a bit. She is afraid to get to close to anyone for fear that they see that she may not be totally in control. Despite this need to seem totally in control, Storm is a very passionate and emotional person. This will lead to some interesting new relationships and conflicts for Storm in the series.”

Back when there was only one X-Men book, Scott and Ororo fought a duel for leadership of the team. A powerless Storm was able to defeat Cyclops.

With the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now, Cyclops and Emma are missing, Wolverine is dead, the school is gone (?) and Storm is now the most experienced X-Man.

Storm’s team will include Old Man Logan, young Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Iceman, Colossus and Magik. Lemire confirmed Forge will be part of the cast.
