Jessica Drew gets back to her spy roots in the upcoming Secret Avengers by Ales Kot and Michael Walsh.

Spider-Woman made a huge comeback in the New Avengers era by Brian Michael Bendis.

The fan favorite Avenger with ties to Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. teams up with Black Widow, Hawkeye, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Jr and M.O.D.O.K. as the covert squad of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“She’s naturally curious, loves exploration. Her past as a spy makes her a prime asset to (Maria) Hill; she’s a rookie compared to Black Widow, however she’s still very capable. So what she wants at the beginning is to learn more about the world and make new friends. What she gets—well, you’ll see,” Kot tells Marvel.com.

Kot explains how Jessica and Natasha will bond.

“The team doesn’t have a chance to react at first, except for Black Widow, who instantly takes Jessica out for some quality spa time,” says Kot. “Spider-Woman is a professional in her field, but compared to Black Widow she’s a rookie. For example: Black Widow knows that relaxation is as important as practice. You overdo one? The imbalance hits you when you’re not expecting it. You’re on a mission? Be rested. Be at your best. Spider-Woman has to learn that, and she needs to learn to focus—learn more about how to deal with sensory input.”

As for “the gift” referenced in the Michael Walsh teaser art above?

“It’s a gift. She doesn’t know she’s got it,” Kot replied, “The bomb. And also the things born out of space and time as we understand them.”

Could born out of space and time refer to Jessica’s connection to the Skrulls? The Skrull Empress impersonated Jessica for years leading up to the Secret Invasion. Could the new story arc be tied to Jessica’s time when she was a prisoner of the alien shapeshifter?

Secret Avengers #1 arrives next week.
