Spider-Man will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have reached an agreement to collaborate and share the hero.

After months of speculation the rival studios joined forced and fans win.

Spider-Man will be swinging with the Avengers and a new Spidey movie will be produced with the team who made the beloved blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rumors didn’t stop fans from dreaming of a Spidey/Avengers movie team-up and now it’s in overdrive.

Here’s how Spidey could swing into the Avengers world.

When Brian Michael Bendis blew up and rebuilt the Avengers comic franchise he recruited Peter Parker to launch a bold new era that ran over a decade. Parker even scored an Avenging Spider-Man spinoff title.

Here are comics epics that could be the inspiration for a Spidey/Avengers movie team-up:

Breakout

The Avengers had disassembled after deaths and a betrayal by one of their own.

Six months later Spidey villain Electro kills the power at The Raft (a maximum security island prison for super-powered criminals) and sparks a massive breakout. Captain America, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage and Spider-Woman answer the call. The heroes are helped by The Sentry who was being held in The Raft. Steve Rogers declares that fate has brought them together just like when the original team assembled and a New Avengers is born.

The roundup of super fugitives and the conspiracy behind the breakout leads to a bigger conspiracy and to the Savage Land, a prehistoric jungle complete with dinosaurs. This classic comics locale has not appeared in a movie yet.

This was a more confident Spidey we haven’t seen before. Spider-Man was hanging with the Avengers, living in Stark Tower and loved by the public but still swinging with his quick wips and comic relief. Even Jonah Jameson couldn’t hurt Spidey because the friendly neighborhood hero was now one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Civil War

Captain America: Civil War is set for 2016. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr will again play Steve Rogers and Tony Stark but on opposing sides.

The American public and government reached their limit after a horrible accident with rookie heroes kills innocent children. The Superhero Registration Act becomes the law of the land. Tony Stark leads a team of heroes who support the plan to register, train and pay all heroes as government employees who surrender their secret identities. Steve Rogers leads the opposition citing the need for secret identities to protect a hero’s loved ones and to act against any enemy and not be the government’s super police officers.

This is would be a perfect film to introduce Spidey into the Avengers movie canon. In the comic, Peter Parker was torn between two heroes and friends leading to a huge moment in Spidey history.

In the aftermath Tony Stark run S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers and the Avengers Initiative, a registered team in every state of the U.S. but there was a tragic price for victory that will create huge drama for the film franchise.

Secret Invasion

The Avengers go underground while the mastermind of events leading all way back to Breakout is revealed. The shape-shifting Skulls have infiltrated every team of heroes, S.H.I.E.L.D. and even every criminal organization on Earth. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are all finally reunited along with Spidey, X-Men and Fantastic Four against the Super Skulls.

Dark Reign

What would be one of Peter Parker’s worst nightmares?

Norman Osborn running the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D.  In the aftermath of Invasion, Osborn turns the Marvel Universe upside down, assembles his own Dark Avengers to hunt down Spidey and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Yes, we’re pretty much asking Marvel Studios to make a quadrilogy of the Bendis New Avengers era but it was so cinematic and really brought home the idea of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from every corner of the Marvel Universe.

Sony was planning a Sinister Six, Venom film and a possible spinoff starring a female hero from Spidey’s cast. No word on if those spinoffs will move ahead but Spidey can now count on his Avenging friends in a showdown with the Sinister Six.

Don’t forget Bendis also recruited Wolverine for his New Avengers. Could Marvel and Fox find a way to have Hugh Jackman join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on the big screen? If Marvel and Sony can see the power of sharing maybe Fox will too.
