In the 1990’s Marvel launched an entire line of comics starring reimagined heroes (Ghost Rider, X-Men, Doom, Punisher) set in the future.
Spider-Man 2099 was created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi. Miguel was a brilliant scientist attempting to recreate the powers of the original Spidey in others. An accident caused O’Hara’s DNA to be rewritten with spider genetic code. This reimagined hero of Marvel’s future was the first Latino Spider-Man.
“It’s Spider-Man of the future!” Dan Slott tells Marvel.com, “How can you not love Miguel? He’s awesome. I, like everybody in the 1990’s, was reading the 2099 books, and SPIDER-MAN 2099 and GHOST RIDER 2099 were my favorites. For some time, I’ve wanted to do a Spidey 2099 meet-up or have things from the present affect the future and what was weird was that I later got to write the ‘Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions’ video game. And it was like, ‘Heyyy…’ So that worked out but you will notice that there is a big hint slash clue running around in Big Time that shows that things were all aiming this way.”
The meeting of the now and future Spider-Man sets the stage for something bigger for the entire Marvel Universe.
“This storyline will set-up a threat, not just for the world of Spider-Man but for the Marvel Universe,” says Slott. “Everyone will feel the impact. You will notice that in the Marvel Universe, a lot of things have been happening. The time stream. We’ve had the Age of Ultron, we’ve had young X-Men showing up, we’ve had all these different things happening in the time stream of the Marvel Universe and now, Miguel O’Hara is showing up. What could it mean?”
Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman spin this tale of time travel and twists when Miguel O’Hara guests stars in a 3-part arc kicking off in Superior Spider-Man #17.
Marvel shared a look at Stegman’s inked pages showing the future webslinger in the pages of the first chapter.
Stegman confirmed the two Spider-Man will clash and with Otto Octavius behind the Spidey mask – it affects how he depicts the fight:
“Oh yeah. With Superior, there’s always an element that he’s willing to take it to the maximum degree. He’s basically going against his nature to not do extreme damage. I think that when you see him fighting, he goes for more brutal tactics. Whereas Miguel, he’s fighting more to disarm and gain control of the situation. Otto is ready to decapitate somebody.”
Miguel O’Hara (aka Spider-Man 2099) swings into modern day Manhattan in Superior Spider-Man #17 Wednesday.
