Marvel and Sony Pictures agreement to share and collaborate on Spider-Man is leading to a web of fallout including superhero movie schedule shifts and the search for a new Spidey.

Here’s a quick recap: Spidey will first appear in a Marvel Universe film. Sony will then release a new Spider-Man movie July 28, 2017 co-produced by Marvel Studios Kevin Feige and his team with Amy Pascal, who has overseen the Spider-Man franchise since 1999.

Sony and Marvel will collaborate on a “new direction” for Spidey.

Marvel and Sony are “exploring opportunities to integrate Marvel Comics Universe characters into future Spider-Man films.”

Sony is looking to “go back to Spidey’s roots and put the character back in high school” which would mean a new actor in the role according to Variety. The report claims Sony is moving ahead with a spinoff starring the Sinister Six and film that features a female hero from the Spider-Verse.

What could this mean Spidey fans?

Here are our top Spider-Man movie wishes:

Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War.

The young hero finds himself torn between two icons (Steve Rogers and Tony Stark) when the Superhero Registration Act passes in a attempt to reign in costumed vigilantes like him. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. will star in the superhero war film which introduces Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman.) From a logistics and story standpoint this is the most likely Marvel movie to introduce the new Spidey.

No more origins.

Let’s just join Spidey swinging into a new film of teen angst, finding his identity and fighting bad guys. After seeing two teens and a college guy juggling jobs I was hoping we’d see adult Parker working for Empire State University or Horizon Labs and a new Avengers recruit like in the New Avengers era. Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk reboot joined the action in progress and referred to the origin in flashback but kept the action in the here and now. This would be great for Spidey who could become the media’s poster boy for the Superhero Registration Act in Civil War. (Yes, that’s a hint for having Jonah Jameson back!)

Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson?

Fans have seen both famous girlfriends in films but how about having the original tortured teen triangle like in the comics?

Felicia Hardy?

If it’s too soon to show Gwen or MJ why not go with our favorite female from Spidey’s cast. Hardy is the daughter of a famous cat burglar.  A traumatic attack inspired Hardy to become an expert in fighting styles and she followed her father’s legacy as Black Cat. The super villain and sometimes anti-heroine was Parker’s first superhero girlfriend and competed with MJ for his affection. She’s our top choice for a Spidey spinoff but recent breakouts Spider-Gwen and Silk from Spider-Verse could swing ahead in popularity.

No More Goblins?

Loved the Osborn father/son monster madness of Willem Dafoe and James Franco in the first trilogy. Intrigued by the Oscorp conspiracy in the Amazing films but have we seen enough of the Green or any Goblin? We do love the New Avengers Norman Osborn from Dark Reign, one of our top Spider-Man/Avengers team-up movie dreams. Let’s go with villains we haven’t seen: Morbius, Vulture, Silvermane?

Sinister Six.

Sony is reportedly still planning a spinoff starring a collection of Spidey’s greatest enemies but who’s the hero we should root for? Will Parker be in it? With friends like Avengers, it could be a great movie to see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes coming in to help the friendly neighborhood but outnumbered Spider-Man.

Miles Morales?

The popularity of Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales is huge. A new creative direction that continues the legacy would be to go with Miles. After all the cinematic Avengers take inspiration from the Ultimates and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is Ultimate Universe Fury. Our Spidey sense says the studios will go with Parker but expect a cameo from a young Miles. With the popularity of Spider-Verse we could see Spider-Gwen, Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman or Silk to make an appearance or launching point  into the Sony or Marvel franchises.

The “Kingpin” Factor.

Wilson Fisk is primarily Daredevil’s arch enemy but he’s attempted to exterminate Spider-Man and been the evil mastermind behind several of Spidey’s villains. Fisk will be played Vincent D’Onofrio in the upcoming Daredevil Netflix series but could be part of a series/film crossover that ties them all together kind of an evil version Nick Fury for all three franchises.

What do you think of the Spider-Man reboot that swings him into the Marvel Universe? Who should play Spidey? (Some of our readers have already starting campaign for Dylan O’Brien of Teen Wolf and The Maze Runner) as a choice for a teen who can bring the humor – remember he’s a quick with a wise-crack as he is a web shoot- back to Spidey.
