Can’t wait for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to return?

A brand new S.H.I.E.L.D. series starring Agent Phil Coulson arrives this week.

Acclaimed writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, Captain America, Hulk) launches this new book in which any Marvel hero could be recruited by Coulson for his strike force.

“He is the coolest Marvel Comics fan ever. E-V-E-R. He’s amazing at his job, he’s badass, he’s funny—and he loves the history of the Marvel Universe as much as I do,” Waid told Marvel.com about writing Phil Coulson.

As we learned in The Avengers film, Coulson is a “fanboy” of Captain America but as an operative how does he regard the costumed heroes.

“He values them all, and his own personal “super-power” is that he studies them relentlessly and knows more about each and every Marvel hero’s abilities and capabilities than they themselves do. Every mission counts on Phil being able to assemble the exact right team for the task at hand, and to him, every Marvel hero and villain is a potential S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. His choices will often surprise the readers, but everything rides on Phil being able to size up any threat and know exactly, precisely who to draft,” Waid told Marvel.com.

“That means he can’t play favorites. That said, very much like Coulson [on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.], Phil is more deferential to those who came before him than he is with the newer heroes, who often need to earn his full trust.”

Waid confirmed Melinda May, Fitz and Simmons from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be in the Marvel comic universe.

The new comic book arrives just in time as the television show goes on hiatus to make way for Agent Carter.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 arrives Wednesday.
