Time Runs Out.
Everything Ends.
When Avengers and New Avengers ends.
Secret Wars begins.
Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso and Executive Editor/Senior Vice President Tom Brevoort answered questions in a big Marvel Secret Wars Live event hailed as “the announcement to end all announcements.”
It all goes back to the start of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers run. A mysterious event in the multiverse created a series of intersections leading to incursions between rival universes in which both or only one is destroyed. Black Panther assembled a new Illuminati to stop the incursions and save our Earth.
It will all come down to two beloved universes and the heroes who call them home.
“The Marvel Universe. The Ultimate Universe. They’re gonna smash together,” said Alonso, “It’s all the universes you can imagine. This is the Marvel Universe moving forward.”
The lead up to the final incursion will happen in the final issues by Hickman: Avengers #33, New Avengers #44. The main event will be in Secret Wars #1.
Brevoort revealed “the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Universe will collide and the heroes of those worlds will have 8 hours to figure out what to do about it before both universes are destroyed. And they won’t (laughs) – I’ve ruined Secret Wars for you. But that’s just the first issue.
Brevoort explained Battleworld is what’s left after the destruction of the two universe and the “little melting pot in which the new Marvel Universe will be created.”
“Every piece of this world is a building block for the Marvel Universe moving forward. None of these stories are Elseworlds or What Ifs? or Alternate reality stories,” Alonso said, “they are set in THE reality of the Marvel Universe and have legs.”
The duo clarified the previous teasers based on classic epics were books and part of the new Marvel Universe during Secret Wars and beyond.
Secret Wars #2 will be a “guided tour of of the new Battleworld and set up everything you need to know” in an oversized issue in May.
Alonso clarified the Marvel Comics does not follow the lead of Marvel Studios.
“We tell our own stories,” said Alonso, “you’ll be shocked at the chances we’re willing to take.”
“The Marvel Universe as you know it is done. The Ultimate Universe as you know it is done,” said Brevoort.
Secret Wars #1 arrives in May just after a preview from Marvel for Free Comic Book Day.
