Marvel makes it official: Ryan Coogler will direct Black Panther.
The acclaimed director of Fruitvale Station and Creed will bring the first mainstream comic black super hero to the big screen.
“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,” said producer Kevin Feige. “The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created Black Panther in the pages of Fantastic Four. In the comics T’Challa is the Prince of Wakanda, a fictional African nation and the only source of vibranium. T’Challa would become a fan-favorite Avenger and later King of his technologically advanced homeland. T’Challa is a powerful warrior with genius level intellect.
Chadwick Boseman will make his first appearance as the hero in Captain America: Civil War on May 6th. You may remember Captain America’s shield is made of vibranium. Ultron seized the mysterious metal from a mercenary named Klaw, one of the few men to get out of Wakanda alive with the stolen metal. Klaw is one of T’Challa’s deadliest enemies. No official word on the plot of the film.
Black Panther arrives February 16, 2018 leading right into Avengers: The Infinity War, Part I.
In comics T’Challa will help lead the final assault on Doctor Doom in Secret Wars #9 this week and a new Black Panther ongoing series by Ta-Nehsi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze arrives this Spring.
