The Russo Brothers will be back for Captain America 3 after the critical and blockbuster success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Joe and Anthony Russo brought the World War II hero into the modern age and brought an old school political thriller theme to the modern super hero action. The brothers say that tone will continue as they plan the next film and Steve Rogers’ pursuit of his friend Bucky.
“The character was invented for a political purpose. So it’s hard to get away from that nature,” the Russos tell Yahoo Movies.
While modern movie icons are dark and disillusioned, the brothers want to keep Steve a symbol of hope and Joe says “his morality is part of this super power.”
From the image of the broken shield in the Avengers: Age of Ultron preview to Falcon taking over as Captain America in comics, some fans are speculating a major status quo change in the third film.
The Russos did say they’re “bringing new elements to the table that will give us a twist on the Winter Soldier.”
In the comics, when Steve “died” Bucky redeemed himself as the new Captain America. Steve escaped his prison and eventually became Cap again while Bucky returned to his role as Winter Soldier, but as a covert agent working for Nick Fury.
The Super Soldier Serum was taken out of Steve and now Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) has been recruited by Rogers to be the All-New Captain America this Fall.
Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie are both booked for more Marvel sequels but who might become the new Cap?
Fans will know more after Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, then Captain America 3 arrives in 2016.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives on Blu-Ray September 6.
