After Robert Downey Jr. said he was in talks with Marvel Studios about Iron Man 4 last week then a Civil War teaser today from Marvel comes the bomb drop:

Robert Downey Jr. is in final talks to join Captain America 3 according to Variety – setting up a film based on the epic Civil War story.

Downey Jr. is already playing Tony Stark in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3.

The plot would be based on the story that pits Tony Stark vs. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) after the United States passes the Superhero Registration Act – which forces anyone with super powers to register, reveal their identities and work as super police for the government.

Iron Man sides with the government. Captain America leads the resistance saying the act violates civil liberties and goes on the run. This could make Tony Stark the “villain” of Captain America 3 and give the sequel a powerful moral center surrounded by hero vs. hero action.

This move could set the stage for Doctor Strange and Ant-Man joining one of two rival team in future Avengers movies.

SPOILER ALERT:

If you have not read Civil War stop reading now.

If Captain America 3 is based on Civil War it could set the stage for Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) becoming the new Captain America. In the aftermath of Civil War – Steve Rogers is believed to be assassinated but was trapped in time by the Red Skull. Bucky was reformed and stepped up to be the new Cap.

Tony Stark became head of the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and launched the a plan to have a registered super team in every state.

No official word but it looks like Marvel Comics is launching a new Civil Wars event in 2015 – a year before Captain America 3 hits cinemas.

Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives in May 2015 followed by Ant-Man.
