The X-Men have fought Sentinels, Brotherhoods of Evil Mutants, Brood and hate-mongering crusaders but the Children of the Atom face pure evil way back in Inferno.
It was mutants vs. demons with the souls of their friends at stake as a satanic army took over Manhattan.
The match is lit again.
Marvel announced Inferno, a Secret Wars Warzones a new tie-in series by Dennis Hopeless (Avengers Arena, Spider-Woman) and Javier Garron (Cyclops.)
The original crossover reunited the X-Men (including Storm, Colossus, Wolverine) with X-Factor (then Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Archangel, Iceman) and the momentous kiss between Logan and Jean.
This epic centered on Illyana Rasputin as Darkchilde, Madelyn Pryor as the Goblin Queen with demon lords Sym and N’astirh. The mutants won but at a price.
“One thing that always bummed me out about the original story was how quickly everything got resolved,” Hopeless told Marvel.com. “It was an issue or two of crazy in each series and then back to normal. I always wanted more. So in our story, the X-Men lost the battle over Manhattan five years back and the evil has been transforming the island ever since. At this point the Empire State Building is this hideous living spire that just keeps growing and twisting up into the charred sky. The city’s a burnt out husk and the demons run the show.”
Illyana grew up in Limbo in New Mutants and that’s part of the appeal Hopeless want to explore again.
“I really loved the exploration of Illyana’s growing up in [Limbo], She has this whole crazy history with all these demons that none of her teammates or her brother understood. We’re definitely going to be delving into Illyana’s Darkchylde side and how it affects her relationships.”
Hopeless will promote Colossus to team leader in this demonic world.
“[This] Colossus is much more single-minded than the one we know and love,” the writer warns. “He lost his sister to the Inferno five years ago and is absolutely obsessed with getting her back. Unfortunately, nobody is allowed in or out of the island. Piotr has been carrying this heavy burden around for years, always waiting for his next opportunity to right the wrong. He’s definitely not somebody you’d want to mess with.”
The Inferno squad will include Colossus, Nightcrawler, Domino and Boom Boom.
In Uncanny X-Men Magik saved the team by taking all of Limbo into her. Illyana has been studying under Doctor Strange to control her power but with Inferno unleashed again…will Darkchild take control of her again?
