Deadpool is killing it at the box-office. The R-rated X-Men spinoff is sparking speculation that the next Wolverine sequel could get even bloodier, sexier and darker earning a R rating.

Blade, V For Vendetta, The Punisher, Watchmen, The Crow came before but the Merc With the Mouth is now the Merc With the Money – and could inspire Hollywood to unleash these edgy heroes on the big screen.

Here are our four comic books that could be the next R rated comic book films for your consideration:

X-Force:

Wolverine. Deadpool. Psylocke. Archangel. Fantomex. This volume by Rick Remender was the bloodiest, most twisted roster of the covert black ops team. Logan kept this squad secret from the X-Men because they had a mission: kill Apocalypse before he could be reborn. X-Force was always a pro-active squad who struck mutant enemies before they could attack. With the success of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, introduction of Psylocke and Archangel (Olivia Munn, Ben Hardy) in X-Men: Apocalypse and one more Wolverine for Hugh Jackman, the team is almost in place. A deadly squad of heroes, the Psylocke/Archangel/Fantomex triangle, a no-holds-barred Logan and Deadpool just as violent, smart-mouthed and naughty as we loved him in this Spring’s surprise.

The Authority:

I remember the shock and awe when I first read the adventures of this team by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. This is fuel for fans wanting more adult superhero action. The roster includes archtypes you would recognize among the Justice League or Avengers but in a very darker, violent and sexual context:

Apollo and Midnighter – imagine a flawed Superman and sadistic Batman but as gay lovers, were part of a team led by the enigmatic, electric, hedonistic Jenny Sparks, who declared to alien invaders, “Earth is under new management. This World is Mine!”

The Massive:

The men and women of the Ninth Wave just wanted to make a difference and save the planet.  Then world went to hell. The heroes of Brian Wood’s apocalyptic epic aren’t superheroes – they are environmentalists.

A series of disasters ravages the Earth, sinks cities and coastlines, demolishes economies and governments. In this post-crash, post-disaster world how do environmentalists stay on their mission to save the Earth when the world is already dead?

Captain Callum Israel and the crew of the Kapital are in search of their friends on The Massive. The crew’s voyage in a ruthless new world of violent pirates, no law, no order, limited supplies and crumbled governments is a dark vision of what our world could be.

The Killing Joke.

DC is already producing an R-rated animated version of this ultimate Joker story. Will Ben Affleck’s potential Batman film be based on Alan Moore’s epic.

In this story Joker kidnaps Barbara Gordon in the most iconic Batman vs Clown Prince of Crime fight ever but the most incredible acting challenge will go to the actor playing Jim Gordon as he watches what happens to his daughter.

Jared Leto’s portrayal in the upcoming Suicide Squad may give us the most sadistic Joker in cinema history. We have already seen hints of the new Joker’s crimes (including Death in the Family Jason Todd) haunting Affleck’s Dark Knight in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Producers may be setting the stage for Affleck vs Leto in the shocking classic confrontation by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland.
