Peter David on The End of X-Factor

X-Factor 259This will truly be the end of an era.

After a decade of writing Peter David is preparing The End of X-Factor.

Back in the early 90’s Mutant Genesis (when Chris Claremont and Jim Lee launched the first X-Men #1) the original X-Men left their series, X-Factor, to join the two new X-Men teams/books.

I remember thinking at the time that they just put an odd mix of characters that didn’t fit into any of the other X-books into this book to keep the X-Factor title going.

I was wrong.

Havok, Polaris, Wolfbane, Madrox, Quicksilver and Guido aka Strong Guy became the U.S. government’s mutant team and under the guidance of David – a wonderful era of mutant tales began. Larry Stroman and future Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada were among the artists of David’s first run with the title. That was 1991-93 and David left after 20 amazing issues.

But you can go home again…even if that house has mutated.

After a successful Madrox limited series in 2004 a new X-Factor book was reborn in 2005 (in the wake of Decimation) with Jamie Madrox the Multiple Man leading X-Factor Investigations. Siryn, Monet, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, Shatterstar, Rictor, Layla Miller and later Longshot, Pip the Troll and finally Havok & Polaris worked for the mutant detective agency.

Peter David explains why X-Factor will end with issue #260 on Marvel.com

“It just seemed the right time. ‘The Hell on Earth War’ was so huge that it was as if everything I’d been doing had led up to it. When you’ve reached a dramatic natural climax, that’s the place to stop.”

David promises each member of the team will get the spotlight as the clock ticks down to the finale:

“It will be a series of one-issue stories each focusing on one or two characters, trying to give each of them a decent conclusion,” says David.

Peter David already had a project at Marvel but no word on what it could be.

X-Factor was known for its tangled romances:
