Ian Fleming’s James Bond Lives in SKYFALL

courtesy 007.com

Skyfall celebrates 50 years of the James Bond film franchise with clever lines and out-and-out brilliant homages to previous films. Director Sam Mendes packed the new Daniel Craig Bond film with influences from the series while making an entirely modern 007 movie.

Mystery woman Severine, the Macao casino and the voyage to the Dead Island of the villain Silva (Javier Bardem) took me back to The Man With the Golden Gun starring Roger Moore and Christopher Lee. You can see a huge influence on Skyfall from Ian Fleming’s later novels You Only Live Twice and The Man with the Golden Gun. The death of rebirth of Bond is seen in Skyfall and the aforementioned Fleming novels.

I wanted to share this insightful article by Neill McNally for MI6.Com. The author examines the parallels between the new film and shows how Ian Fleming’s vision of James Bond is alive and thriving in the Daniel Craig era.

The James Bond series is now available on Blu-ray with a spot in the collection for Skyfall. You can already pre-order Skyfall but I want to see him a few more times in the theater!

Heath Ledger Was Approached to Play BATMAN

The Dark Knight Rises one sheet courtesy Warner Brothers

As we count down to the release of The Dark Knight Rises Christopher Nolan made a big revelation about how his Batman Trilogy could have been very different. According to The Playlist Nolan said Heath Ledger was one of many actors he interviewed for the role of Bruce Wayne for Batman Begins.

“He was quite gracious about it, but he said, ‘I would never take a part in a superhero film.’ ” Nolan said. The filmmaker said he thinks Ledger changed his mind eventually because, “I explained to him what I wanted to do with ‘Batman Begins’ and I think maybe he felt I achieved it.”

The story goes on to report that because of Batman Begins Ledger signed on the play the Joker in The Dark Knight without a completed script. Nolan gave his star A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and books on the paintings of Francis Bacon to prepare for the role of the Joker.

For more of the story here’s The Playlist link.

 Op:

I have always believed what makes Christian Bale so good as Bruce Wayne is that he would also be perfect as the Joker. If you saw Bale in his pre Batman Begins roles in American Psycho, The Machinist and Reign of Fire (even the Shaft remake) you could see the man knows how to tap into rage and madness.

The Dark Knight Rises is out on blu-ray/dvd next week.

Ian McKellen On His X-MEN Return!

AvX Consequences #4 courtesy Marvel

Ian McKellen is talking about his return “under the helmet” as Magneto in in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Earlier this week Bryan Singer (director of the first two films in the X-Men series) tweeted that McKellen and Patrick Stewart would return to the franchise in the next film.

While promoting The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey McKellen told Huffington Post:

“What a gas! I mean, Patrick Stewart and I have been have just been playing “Waiting for Godot” throughout England and in the West End of London. So, we’ve stayed in touch. We can’t believe it [laughs]. I thought these were Fassbender and McAvoy’s parts, but — no, no — we’re back. We’ll give them a run for their money. I mean, I haven’t read the script, so I don’t know how much we’ve got to do. But, to be back in that world, and for Bryan to be doing it — with all the success he’s had in the meantime — it’s wonderful. Wonderful.”

Fassbender and McAvoy played the young Magneto and Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class. The new film is based on the classic storyline involving time travel, a team of X-Men from the future trying to influence the past and SENTINELS!

Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine. I expect we might hear a Storm warninig about talks with Halle Berry soon?

Calvin is the ultimate insider. He’s one of the Court’s assassins. In the premiere issue Calvin found a new partner in his mission to bring down the Court forever. This week they invade one of the Court’s most powerful fortresses and discover another of its most twisted mysteries and tragic victims.

Writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV are plotting out like story like a seductive trap worthy of the Court’s most devious minds. Calvin’s heist turns into a life or death fight with another Talon with a sick connection to the mysterious organization. Calvin strikes a powerful blow to the Owls – and they’re ready to strike back.

If you love the twisted mystery of the Court of Owls epic in Batman then check out Talon to uncover more of the cabal’s secrets and root for a new DC anti-hero.

When the Batman movie franchise begins again – producers should definitely consider the Court of Owls for a movie – it’s that good!

IRON MAN 3 New Photos!

Iron Man 3 courtesy Marvel

Marvel shared four new photos from Iron Man 3. The Armored Avenger’s third film features the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) and the on-screen debut of the Iron Patriot armor. The terrorist lays waste to Tony Stark’s world as you saw in the trailer.

Who is wearing the all-American heavy metal suit? In the comic book Norman Osborn developed the suit and led his Dark Avengers (a team of villains posing as the Avengers.)

Will Tony (Robert Downey Jr) or James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) or a new character wear the red, white and blue in next summer’s film? James Badge Dale is in the film – perhaps he straps in as the Iron Patriot?

This is the first time we’ve seen Rebecca Hall from the film. Hall plays a scientist who co-develops the Extremis nanotechnology – which falls into the wrong hands.

Iron Man 3 opens May 3, 2013.

What are you excited about the most from Iron Man 3?

Mandarin, Iron Patriot, Extremis, something else?

AVENGERS #1 Preview

Avengers #1 courtesy Marvel

SUPER SIZE!

The Brian Michael Bendis Avengers era ended with week with New Avengers #34.  Marvel recruited Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opena to relaunch Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the Marvel Now. In December’s Avengers #1 the franchise will “go large” with 2 issues per month and a bigger roster of heroes.

Marvel provided Comic Book Resources with a first look at variant covers and inside premiere issue.

I LOVED this Steve McNiven variant featuring the new Indestructible Hulk and Jermone Opena will no doubt deliver a masterpiece with each issue.

I’m a huge fan of Hickman’s SHIELD, Manhattan Projects and Fantastic Four and it appears he’s bringing his big science, big cosmic level concepts and knowledge of Marvel history to the first arc.

The expanded roster will allow the Avengers to fight threats on Earth and beyond! Prepare to have your mind blown.

Fantastic Future For the FF

FF #1 courtesy Marvel

It’s a new beginning for the Future Foundation in this week’s FF#1 by Matt Fraction and Mike Allred.

Here’s what you need to know: Reed Richards created the Future Foundation to help shape the world’s most brilliant young minds (including mutants, aliens and clones) into the leaders of a brighter future. Reed is taking his family on a vacation into uncharted time and space. (The real reason behind the journey is far more heartbreaking.)

FF #1 is a recruitment drive for new heroes to be the world’s new Fantastic Four while Marvel’s First Family ventures to unknown worlds. Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben recruit their replacements in clever scenes that offer great interactions and logical reasons why these new four have been chosen. Between those scenes Fraction has the extended family of FF kids explain the Foundation to their new leader.

FF #1 courtey Marvel

The human and hilarious storytelling tell you everything you need and gives you compelling reasons why should join the FF. Mike and Laura Allred’s pop art styles really convey the wonder, hope and fun in every panel. Ant-Man, Medusa, She-Hulk and the future Ms.Thing may be replacements but I think they’ll win a prime space in the hearts of comic book fans soon!
