Smasher! Hyperion! Captain Universe! These are some of the new heroes that answered Captain America’s call for help. When a writer with a resume like Jonathan Hickman (Fantastic Four, SHIELD, Manhattan Projects) takes on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes you know they won’t be staying on our big blue marble for long! After a showdown on Mars in the first arc Hickman sends his team across the galaxy.

In this week’s Avengers #5 the team blasts off to battle an invading enemy. What will we learn about Smasher in this issue?

Smasher is the first human member of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard who appear to suffer a major defeat on an alien moon.

The Imperial Guard are a collection of alien warriors from the universe who serve the Shi’ar Empire. The X-Men have clashed and fought with them over the years. Imperial Guard leader Gladiator is now the Emperor and is currently recovering after a beating by the Phoenix Five in AvX.

WINTER SOLDIER’s New Mission, New Team

Winter Soldier #15 courtesy Marvel

This week Jason Latour and Nic Klein take over the adventures of Bucky Barnes in Winter Soldier#15.

Ed Brubaker brought Bucky Barnes back as the brainwashed assassin and set him on a path of redemption during his acclaimed Captain America run that continued with the Winter Soldier series.

Comic Book Resources talked with the writer turned artist (his creator owned title Loose Ends and Untold Tales of the Punisher MAX) about accepting the mission to continue’s Bucky’s story.

“I was surprised to get the chance, simply because I didn’t think this character would ever be in play. Brubaker’s work on this character has been great. He’s really built such a strong and compelling foundation– that when the possibility was introduced my mind went off like a nuclear test site.

As for how it came about — I’d drawn a few stories for my editor, Lauren Sankovitch, in the past and I’d made it clear I was interested in writing for hire, too. Fortunately she seemed to like my creator-owned work and when the time came to cast the book she asked me if I would be interested.”

FEARLESS DEFENDERS Women Take Over!

Fearless Defenders #1 courtesy Marvel

Never fear! The Fearless Defenders are here to kick ass in the Marvel Now! Valkyrie and Misty Knight star in this follow-up to Fear Itself: The Fearless.

I have been sharing my hope that Valkyrie of The Fearless and The Defenders would live on in the Marvel Now. Now I guess we’ll see if these are two great concepts that taste great together?

Cullen Bunn (Venom, Wolverine, Deadpool Killustrated) writes the new series with Will Sliney on art. Bunn scripted the excellent Fear Itself: The Fearless 12-part series that I may have posted over and over that I LOVE. I think Misty Knight kicks ass but I absolutely love Valkyrie so you can imagine my excitement!

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS Super Bowl Super Clue?

The Star Trek: Into Darkness Super Bowl trailer fueled the fire over the Khan rumors! The action packed spot featured an interrogation between John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) to Captain Kirk (Chris Pine)

“I’m better.”

“At what?”

“Everything.”

This exchange certainly sounds like Kirk debating with an arrogant, genetically enhanced villain with a “superior intellect.”

Paramount will screen the sequel on IMAX screens two days early according The Hollywood Reporter. Fans can boldly see Star Trek Into Darkness on select IMAX screens starting May 15th.

Chris Evans suits up again as the First Avenger in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The next film will add Anthony Mackie as the heroic Falcon and Frank Grillo as evil muscle man Crossbones.

Emily Van Camp (Revenge) may be playing SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter. All the buzz about the casting of Cap’s girlfriend inspired sinister visions of who should play the raging redheaded she-devil from Cap’s rogues gallery!  If Crossbones is in the sequel then will the Red Skull’s psychotic daughter (and Crossbones’s lover/partner) join the film?

Who should play Sinthea Schmidt aka SIN? Here are five redheads who could really embody pure evil as the Red Skull’s daughter:

REVENGE Star As CAPTAIN AMERICA 2’s Leading Lady?

Has Marvel found Steve Rogers’s modern-day love interest? Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13 of SHIELD) is the descendant of Steve’s World War II love interest Peggy Carter. Emily Van Camp of ABC’s Revenge has been cast as Sharon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier according to Deadline.

Van Camp plays Emily Thorne (real name Amanda Walker) on the hit series about a young woman seeking vengeance on the family that destroyed her father’s reputation and had him killed. This season the soap has ramped up the spy elements as Emily and her partner (who they jokingly call James Bond on the show because of his accent and skills) try to thwart the plans of a sinister society.

Looks like this season has been practice if Van Camp is really signed on to play the SHIELD agent opposite Chris Evans!
