Kelly Sue DeConnick made her first appearance at the third annual GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle. The celebration of women in geek culture was an opportunity for the Carol Corps to show their support for the writer of Captain Marvel and the author’s continuing mission to inspire women who want careers in comics.

I’ve seen DeConnick reach out to young women after Emerald City and Rose City Comic Con panels to encourage them. The Captain Marvel writer recently made headlines at the Women of Marvel panel at New York Comic Con for saying she was “willing to be disliked…willing to be called names, willing to make people uncomfortable so my daughter doesn’t have to.”

DeConnick’s success and passionate support of women in the creative field made her the perfect guest for GeekGirlCon. Continue reading Kelly Sue DeConnick at GeekGirlCon

Here’s a first look at X-O Manowar #19 – the beginning of a new, standalone story arc at the center of Valiant’smost anticipated comic book event by writer Robert Venditti and Eisner Award-winning artist Cary Nord.

Janet Van Dyne is famous for her fashion sense and ever-changing uniforms. The mighty and mighty chic Avenger is currently serving on the Uncanny Avengers Unity Squad after coming back from the microverse in the previous Avengers volume.

I had a double take this weekend at GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle – the third annual celebration of women in geek culture.

You have to admire the dedication of a cosplayer who works not one but two looks for the hero they love. I salute this geek girl I met at GeekGirlCon. On Saturday she sported the retro Wasp look complete with headpiece and visor seen here with a woman with great taste in an Avenging Archer! Continue reading WASP Double Cosplay at GeekGirlCon

Black Panther Movie Update

Blade was the first successful Marvel character to hit the big screen but when will fans see another African-American in the leading role of a superhero movie?

Black Panther is one of the greatest and most important heroes in the Marvel Universe with ties to Avengers, Fantastic Four and he’s the former husband of Storm of the X-Men. While promoting Thor: The Dark World, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige was asked about T’Challa.

“In terms of Black Panther, it’s absolutely in development,” Feige told BlackTree TV  “When you have something as rich as Wakanda and his backstory — and clearly Vibranium’s been introduced in the universe already — I don’t know when it will be exactly, but we certainly have plans to bring him to life some day.” Continue reading Black Panther Movie Update

Perfect Villain for MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Eye Spy was the best episode yet of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As the episode unfolded I kept thinking of the perfect villain for the hit series. As Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team tried to uncover who was manipulating a long-lost agent (an impressive turn by Pascale Armand) this evil scientist from Marvel history kept creeping into my brain:

Mister Hyde!

Dr. Calvin Zabo (aka Mister Hyde) was an immoral but brilliant genetic researcher. Zabo took inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and tried to unleash but control monstrous strength and beastial abilities. The Avenger from Asgard (Chris Hemsworth) fights two powerful enemies in Thor: The Dark World.

Christopher Eccleston (The Ninth Doctor Who) plays Malekith and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko of Lost) plays two key roles in a twist that will play out in the sequel. Continue reading KURSE in THOR: THE DARK WORLD
