Marvel’s big event kicks off today in Original Sin #1 by Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato.
Who killed The Watcher, stole his eyes and his armory of powerful weapons? Nick Fury joins fan favorite Avengers and antiheroes like the Punisher in the search for a killer.
The Watcher has been around for decades. Uatu is the silent ancient alien who observes but never interferes. He speaks his final words just before a horrific attack in the first issue.
I was intrigued by how such an old character could finally get the spotlight – even if he’s a corpse. What is the origin of Original Sin?
“At one point Ed Brubaker was going to tackle this story, and placed the first seeds in Marvel Point One. It’s kept coming up, waiting for somebody to grab it. The more we talked about a cosmic murder mystery, the more it grabbed me.” Aaron said in a recent Marvel liveblog.
“The core idea of Original Sin has been kicking around at least since Fear Itself, and if I remember correctly, the initial seed came from Allan Heinberg (Young Avengers)” added Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.
“The Watcher being the one to be killed came from Ed Brubaker.”
“Whereas the seeds for this story were on the table a long time ago, they didn’t really come alive until somebody owned them, and that’s Jason.” said Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso.
“We discussed Original Sin at my very first retreat as Editor-in-Chief, and almost did it then before landing on AvX.” Alonso.
The eight-part core series will spinoff with tie-in issues as secrets about nearly every Marvel hero will be exposed.
“Some characters will become aware of some of the secrets. Not all will become aware of all. The secrets don’t just affect the heroes either.”
“It’s not impossible that even after Original Sin is finished, secrets will still keep coming out in the years to come.” said Brevoort.
When you think about how far back the idea of killing the Watcher was – it makes you wonder and dream about other story ideas yet to come or may never be at those Marvel summits!
