Nova just blasted off! Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness relaunched the Human Rocket with a new kid under the helmet. Marvel revealed Zeb Wells and Paco Medina will take over Sam Alexander’s adventures with Nova #6.

“This is a story that’s been in the works for quite some time. Steve and Ed and I have been in the trenches of knowing where it was going and hoped new readers and the existing fanbase would embrace a new story in the Nova legacy. This is not a reboot or a reinvention, it’s another story. What’s wonderful about Nova is that you can follow the exploits of different characters. People are enjoying Nova and I hope some of that is the story, but I know we have an incredible art team”  said Jeph Loeb.

“The first five issues of Nova are a self-contained story that tell the origin of Sam and the helmet and how he came to be. That perfectly dovetails into where we first saw Sam in the Point One story, then we neatly hand off to the next team,” says Loeb of the transfer.

“What’s kind of wonderful about Nova so far is that people are coming along for the ride. The first two issues set up how Sam Alexander got the helmet and learned what its powers are, but the fun of the story is, what would you do if you found Iron Man’s armor and had no way to get to Tony Stark? After you fly and crash into the moon, what’s going to happen?”

Last week Marvel previewed Sam’s encounter with the Watcher in issue 3.

“The Watcher shows Sam something really really bad and that will be his first real adventure,” teases Loeb.

The next Marvel project by Loeb and McGuinness will be announced later this Summer. This quote hints at a possible Nova Corps book:

“This is by no means me and Ed going away forever. There are literally hundreds of Nova stories to be told. Where Zeb wants to go is so in line with what we have talked about.”

“We pick up in issue #6 post-AvX where Sam has been offered a chance to join the Avengers but also has to go home and explain to his mother where he’s been. Then we want to get him out into the Marvel Universe, bumping into other people and seeing how he fits in,”  said incoming writer Zeb Wells.

Guardians of the Galaxy guest starred in Loeb’s premiere arc. Wells teased that Nova will encounter the Avengers during his run. The original Nova (Richard Ryder) was in the New Warriors with Speedball and Loeb said, “there could be a friendship there.”
