Nightwing is dead.
Long live Richard Grayson – DC superspy.
After teasing the final fate of Nightwing and the cancellation of his solo series fans worried Richard Grayson would be killed on in Forever Evil.
DC Comics revealed Batman’s first sidekick will star in Grayson by writers Tim Seeley and Tom King as revealed in USA Today. King is a former CIA counterterrorism operations officer. Seeley is part of the team writing the new Batman Eternal weekly series. Mikel Janin will be the artist.
The world will believe Grayson died at the hands of Lex Luthor to save the world in Forever Evil but he’s secretly working for Spyral, an organization created by Grant Morrison during his Batman, Incorporated run.
The writers say this a chance for Grayson “to take off the mask and step out on his own in a world where he’s not simply being another hero like the hero he grew up with,” King tells USA Today.
After playing the roles of Robin, Nightwing and even Batman for a while – this is an opportunity for Grayson to step out of the Dark Knight’s shadow and forge a new identity.
“Obviously, he’s a part of a legacy,” Seeley says. “He’s been Robin, he’s been Batman, and now he’s out in the cold by himself.”
“He’s doing something that’s going to cause pain to his friends and family, but he believes in the cause. That tension between having to do something good but having the cost of it being pain to his family, it drives him a little crazy,” added King.
Nightwing #30 – the final issue – arrives May 28th.
Grayson #1 arrives July 2nd.
