There’s a new take on the New Avengers when the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now arrives this Fall.

New Mutants fans will be thrilled to see Roberto DaCosta aka Sunspot is taking the lead of New Avengers by Al Ewing and Gerardo Sandoval.

Sunspot and Cannonball were brought out of the X-Men shadows and recruited by Tony Stark and Steve Rogers to Avengers under Jonathan Hickman’s run. Bobby and Sam were part of the Avengers World spinoff.

Bobby took over the evil think tank known A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) and formed what you might call an outlaw Avengers team.

Ewing explains the mission of Sunspot’s “Assembling” of these New Avengers:

“Sunspot’s essentially continuing his “New Avengers” experiment from Time Runs Out; there, we saw him take over A.I.M., assemble a global team to meet the threat head-on, and lead them into battle. Now that the world is no longer in such obvious danger, he’s tinkering with the formula a little; finding people whose time is now, the next generation of Avengers. No more training, no more academies, no more waiting in the wings, “knowing their place”—they’re full-on Avengers, next-level heroes in a global rescue organization taking on super-threats as big and bad as anything previous teams have ever had to handle.” Ewing told Marvel.com.

“As for A.I.M., when Jonathan Hickman put Sunspot in charge of them, it seemed like a brilliant bit of lateral thinking. I always hate it when someone does something brilliant and fun like that and then it gets swept under the rug for the sake of the status quo, so we’re keeping the change. A.I.M. is Avengers Idea Mechanics now. They’re devoted to the advancement of science and achieving massive societal change, but now they’re doing it through peaceful and positive means. Of course, not all the governments of the world are willing to take Roberto’s word for it.”

The team roster is Sunspot, Songbird, Hulking and Wiccan from Young Avengers, Squirrel Girl and Hawkeye.

No word on Cannonball and Smasher’s future yet but Roberto has definitely changed from young rich boy who first turned into Sunspot on a Brazilian soccer field in the New Mutants original graphic novel.
