There’s a new Ms. Marvel coming to the Marvel Universe and she’s a teenager from New Jersey. The New York Times revealed Kamala Khan is a 16 year-old Muslim girl whose family is from Pakistan. When Kamala develops shapeshifting powers she takes the former code name of the Avenger she admires – Captain Marvel.

The blue-eyed, blonde Carol Danvers went from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel – the title once held by a male hero. Khan is part of the Carol Corps – a devoted fangirl group in comics and in real life who support their favorite superhero – Danvers. The new Ms. Marvel series by writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona.

Kamala continues the Marvel’s tradition of having heroes of diverse backgrounds in their universe:

M (aka Monet St. Croix) is a Muslim from Algerian descent who was a member of Generation X, X-Factor and is joining the all-female X-Men series. Dust is a young mutant from Afghanistan rescued by Wolverine and is now a student at the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters.
