For Your Consideration:
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face the ultimate evil android in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015 and possibly Thanos in Avengers 3 in 2017.
Doctor Strange is getting his own solo film and will likely the third Avengers.
As I read this week’s New Avengers #20 I couldn’t help but imagine Hickman’s epic starring The Illuminati as a big screen adventure.
In Hickman’s Avengers, Captain America and Iron Man lead Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against the forces of evil trying to conquer Earth but in New Avengers, sometimes the greatest enemy is a hero’s darker nature. Both books came to a head in the war against Thanos in Infinity and now the endgame begins.
The original Illuminati (Tony Stark, Namor, Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, Professor Xavier, Black Bolt) secretly assembled to confront the biggest threats to Earth. (Here’s a link to the collection showing how this secret super group were a covert but critical part of Marvel’s greatest epics.)
Black Panther refused to join the original cabal but formed the new version when he learned his homeland was the center of a disaster from from rival universe. The Illuminati are Iron Man, Namor, Black Panther, Reed Richards, Beast and Black Bolt. This secret super group discovered the relentless threat of “incursions” when two universes collide with each other with earth Earth as the focal point. These heroes have made some unethical, unheroic and desperate choices in order to save our planet.
Captain America was mindwiped and kicked out of the group by Dr. Strange will full support of Tony and Reed. The uneasy alliance and manipulation between sworn enemies Black Panther and Namor is pure royal drama right out of Shakespeare and Frank Herbert’s Dune series.
When Doctor Strange joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe it can’t help but bring a different, darker tone to the franchise. The Sorcerer Supreme of Earth descended into the darkest realms of Hell and beyond for the power and knowledge to protect Earth. Strange goes where the mightier heroes can’t.
This week New Avengers – the Doctor may have gone too far.
What happens when the Sorceror Supreme sells his soul?
In this week’s chapter, Namor and Strange commit unforgivable acts as they fight the Avengers of a rival universe to save ours.
New Avengers is operatic in how these great men have fallen. As Hickman is building up to his finale – it will be interesting to see how or if Doctor Strange can be redeemed and exciting to think imagine what the Sorcerer will conjure in Marvel’s cinematic franchise.
