Captain Marvel will soar past Black Widow to become the first Marvel Studios movie with a woman in the lead. Exciting news for the Carol Corps but lots of questions from fans of the assassin turned Avenger. The passionate fan base started a #BlackWidowMovie campaign on Twitter.
Nathan Edmondson (current writer of the Black Widow comic book) responded via Twitter saying he “just whipped this up” his treatment for the first six pages of a hypothetical screenplay for a film.
Op/Ed:
Black Widow by Edmondson and artist Phil Noto is still our favorite new book of the All-New Marvel Now initiative of 2014. It feels cinematic. The first arc could be a movie. The series follows Natasha’s missions when she’s not an Avenger but taking on assignments to make up for her past.
I’m a fan of Scarlett Johansson and longtime fan of Natasha but I wonder if keeping Black Widow as a supporting player is part of Marvel’s longtime strategy. From Iron Man 2 to The Avengers to Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Natasha is a central character that holds the heroes together. While not a leading role – she’s a critical one.
I hope the studios will continue pull inspiration from the Ed Brubaker Cap era and eventually base a movie on his Winter Soldier series which was a Bucky/Natasha thrill ride. If Edmondson continues his killer storytelling on the current Black Widow solo book – Hollywood will have a huge volume of Natasha stories to share in sequels.
Thanks to Spinoff Online & Buzzfeed for originally sharing the Edmondson treatment.
Black Widow returns in Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015. If Robert Downey Jr. is joining Captain America: Civil War, seeing whose side Natasha is on will make for great conflict.
