Mystique is tied to one of the big new mysteries in Cullen Bunn’s new Uncanny X-Men series.

We may have been given a huge clue in this week’s second issue.

Terrigen Mists are killing mutants and sterilizing genes. The mutant race is on the fast track to extinction thanks to the genetic phenomenon that’s creating new Inhumans.

Storm’s team is rescuing mutants from the Mists and providing them safety in X-Haven. Magneto is leading his own team with a very pro-active mission to save mutants from new enemies.

A corporation is profiting from the crisis by providing a different kind of safe haven to mutants for a price. Mutants agree to be frozen in suspended animation until there’s a cure or the Terrigen is gone.

Magneto’s team broke the mutants out of of the transports while Mystique is investigating the Someday corporation in a different way…but who is she working for?

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not read Uncanny X-Men #1,2 stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Among the freed mutants was a healer who was killed by the Dark Riders, who are killing any healers.

Mystique was last seen in custody after Dazzler and rookie X-Men caught her.

In this issue,  Raven is posing as Clarice working for Someday in San Francisco and admits to like being her, her friends and social life.

When “Clarice” is confronted by Someday security, Mystique reveals herself and fights her way out and into a waiting car driven by familiar looking soldiers. Men in dark blue with minimal red lies and gloves and masks with slits for eyes and a mouth like Iron Man. Raven’s getaway is with men in the unmistakable masks and garb of the Hellfire Club.

Mystique appears to eventually join Magneto’s team but for now is she really working for the new Hellfire Club? What is the infamous Inner Circle’s interest in Someday?

The Inner Circle has always been rich and powerful mutants who plot to seize greater financial and political power even at the expense of other mutants. Mutant and former Black King Sebastian Shaw’s weapons corporation built Sentinels for the U.S. government. Emma Frost was Shaw’s White Queen before she joined the X-Men. At one point Shaw lost his memory and kind of an X-Men with the Generation Hope kids. Shaw and Frost are both MIA from the X-Men teams.

The last incarnation of the Hellfire Club was a cabal of ruthless rich kids who recruited Mystique was an instructor for their Hellfire Academy.

Are Shaw and Frost back on the throne of the new Hellfire Club – who would want to take full advantage and have mutants profit from the current genetic crisis affecting the race.
