The first big sci-fi film of the year (and one our most anticipated films of 2013) is breaking record around the globe and hits U.S. theaters this Friday.

Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman star in Oblivion. Cruise plays a “repairman” sent to what is supposed to be a barren Earth but finds Freeman’s character leading a group of survivors.

Former James Bond leading lady Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) plays a mystery woman caught in the conspiracy. The actress explains how she prepared for her role in the sci-fi epic directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy) and the back story with Cruise’s character.

“I watched videos of astronaut training. I was some old romantic movies as a preparation and an inspiration. It’s kind of a work in process. You grow together”

Kurylenko says the challenge of revealing the many layers of her character is what attracted her to the role of  Julia.

“She’s a completely different thing in the end than what we see her as in the beginning. And all the mystery was interesting to work on.”

Kurylenko was asked to compare working with Daniel Craig (her Quantum of Solace co-star) and Tom Cruise.

“They’re both action heroes…and the similar thing to with them is that they do their stunts by themselves. They train a lot. They physically work a lot. So that’s a main  line. They’re both very hard-working,” she replied, “Tom is…fascinating. I don’t know what that man doesn’t know how to do…so it’s very inspiring to work with people like that.”

A spaceship that looks like a spinning bubble is just one of the most spectacular elements of the previews. Kurylenko revealed what it was like in the simulator to achieve those scenes.

“That was like being in a rollercoaster and a washing machine at the same time because it was spinning all the time. And I usually don’t like to go into washing machines when I have a choice (laughs) but here I didn’t have a choice. Tom told me “you don’t have a choice” (laughs) in the end it was funny how I adjusted to that machine.”

When asked if this was her most physically demanding role Kurylenko drew a comparison between her Oblivion character and her role as in the 007 film,

“If you compare Julia to Camille (her secret agent character in Quantum of Solace) Julia is a much more romantic character. Camille is competing with Bond, trying to kill him, trying to fight him. She was pretty much an equivalent of James Bond in a female character which was very different and she didn’t have any romantic story with Bond which is different for Bond girls but very different from Julia.”
