Morena Baccarin is a shining sci-fi star among a galaxy of celebrity guests appearing at Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend. Fans packed a ballroom Friday evening for the chance to ask questions with Baccarin and lined up today for autographs and to express their endless devotion to Firefly.

After Firefly the series and Serenity the movie Baccarin went on to roles on V, Stargate S.G. One and the acclaimed drama Homeland. After playing the heroine Inara she left the Firefly ship to invade Earth as the evil Anna on V.  I asked if the shift to the dark side of sci-fi was on purpose.

“I’m attracted to great characters so for me it’s about story and the opportunity to play something different. And it actually just so happens that three of my favorite characters happen to be in sci-fi because I think there’s actually a lot of amazing roles for females in sci-fi.”

Baccarin’s career has evolved from science fiction to dramas like Homeland but it’s the Serenity fans that still dominate the lines eager for a chance to meet and reminisce.

“I guess the Firefly fans are incredibly loyal and they transfer from projects back and forth. The Firefly fans are excited when they meet us we have this kinship of hatred for Fox. (laughs)”

As we talked about being part of the Whedonverse and extended fan family Baccarin noted how it’s been 14 years since Firefly and it’s “so amazing how people love that show and speaks to how ahead of its time it was, how it’s still relevant and people still enjoy it and it just floors me every time.”

The adventures of the Serenity crew are continuing in a brand new Dark Horse Comic Book series that picks up after the event of the motion picture.

With the success of Leaves on the Wind and a new world in which fans can kick-start Hollywood (Veronica Mars ) I asked if she’d be back and what storyline would she want for Inara.

“I’d be game to revisit that character,” she laughed then notes that she’s heard Mal and Inara are a couple in the new series but that it couldn’t last saying they’d drive each other crazy and “there couldn’t be a happy ending for them.”

And that’s in part why fans are still devoted to the cast and characters who made hearts and mind soar and swoon but was gone far too soon.

Comic book readers should note Baccarin is playing an infamous Batman enemy. Baccarin is the voice of Talia Al Ghul in Son of Batman. Fans may soon see Baccarin on ABC again. She just wrapped Warriors, a pilot in which she plays a military therapist.

Baccarin will be signing autographs Sunday and there’s a photo op scheduled for 3:45pm on the final day of Fan Expo Vancouver.
