DC Comics revealed the creative teams behind the Rebirth books arriving this June. Co-publishers Dan DiDio, Jim Lee and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns introduced the writers and artists and team lineups at WonderCon this past weekend.
Rebirth marks a wave of new number one books. (Action and Detective Comics titles will return to their original numbering) with new creative teams, returning favorite characters but some heroes missing in action…for now.
We can’t help but wonder what happened to these characters?
Midnighter
The vigilante is MIA but his current writer is moving on with a more traditional hero to write. Steve Orlando is now a DC Comics exclusive and launching a brand new Supergirl book. After appearing in a revived Stormwatch book in The New 52, then in Grayson, the former Authority star got his own series. Lucas Trent (his real name?) is the only openly gay male headlining his own book. The Midnighter title may be gone but will the ultra-violent anti-hero have a role in Nightwing?

Duke Thomas and the We Are Robin teens.
Duke was created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo during their Batman Zero Year arc. Duke was seen as Robin in a possible future. In Batman #50, Bruce Wayne made an offer to Duke. Is the Dark Knight getting a new Robin? Snyder and Capullo exit the title after next month’s #51. Snyder is launching All-New Batman. Duke could be in Snyder’s new book or stay on as Bruce’s new Robin in the relaunched Batman by new writer Tom King. While he wasn’t on the cover, Duke could become part of the cast of Detective Comics. James Tynion IV said Batman and Batwoman will be running a team of young heroes including Cassandra Cain, Spoiler, Tim Drake and Clayface.
Martian Manhunter
One of the founding members of the Justice League of America has a more covert role in The New 52 and recently starred in his ongoing series. Writer Rob Williams is relaunching Suicide Squad (with an artist you may have heard of…Jim Lee!) but what of J’onn J’onzz? The alien with a rich history in the DC history may be MIA for now but here’s hoping Bryan Hitch will use him in his upcoming Justice League run.
Supernatural Heroes
John Constantine’s adventures continue in The Hellblazer #1. What about Doctor Fate, Zatanna and the other supernatural crusaders who once starred in Justice League Dark. The sorceress and traveling stage show magician Zatanna would get our top vote if we could only conjure one of the supernatural guardians. Z could continue her romantic and heroic partnership with Constantine but we would love for to consult with Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance in the new Birds of Prey.
