The final Matt Smith Doctor Who episode will be The Time of the Doctor. The Christmas episode sees Smith’s Eleventh Doctor regenerate into a new form (played by Peter Capaldi.)

The finale follows The Name of the Doctor and the recent 50th Anniversary special The Day of the Doctor. Here’s the official synopsis courtesy BBC:

“Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.”

From the poster is appears the Cybermen could be back! Neil Gaiman wrote Nightmare in Silver, the episode from earlier this year saw the dreaded enemies make a comeback but they were obliterated…or were they?

The holiday tradition continues. I was telling a Doctor Who virgin at this weekend’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration at EMP Museum how the Christmas specials often have a darkness and usually a death.

I wonder how the Eleventh Doctor will go out?
