The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding beyond ABC and Netflix as a fan-favorite teen team runs for Hulu.
Marvel announced Runaways will become a new series on the steaming service. Marvel’s Runaways for Hulu is based on the comic created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona.
Teenagers often think strict parents are evil. In Runaways six diverse teenagers learn their parents really are evil. The six can’t stand each other but unite against a common enemy- their parents, a group of super-villains know as the Pride. The teens inherited their parents powers but want to forge their own life.
The included witch Nico Minoru, Alex Wilder, Alien Karolina Dean, Mutant telepath Molly Hayes, cyborg Victor Mancha, genius scientist Chase Stein and Gertrude Yorkes who is mentally linked to an engineered dinosaur named Old Lace. Xavin, a Skrull refugee, and plant controlling Klara Plast later joined the group.
Joss Whedon (Astonishing X-Men writer and The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron director) wrote a volume of the Runaways.
Marvel Television recruited a team who knows how to run television with trouble teens: Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of The O.C. and Gossip Girl.
“We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie–who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience–write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”
“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” said Schwartz.
Schwartz and Savage will executive produce with Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory and Lis Rowinski.
Nico is a member of the all-female Avengers book A-Force.
